Mustang race
Just wondering if I should pick a fight with this '88 mustang GT 5-speed w/180,000 mi vs. my 91 z 305 tpi 5-speed w/105,000. All his has is a ram air setup. Mine has a cat back, short throw shifter, chip and soon (as in next week) slp headers. Should I wait for the headers.
P.S. he's been laying for me awhile reving his engine and such enticing me but he has only been driving stick for 2 weeks(another disadvantage to him)_

The motor in my 91 GT has 180K also. It ran 10.98 last time out with a 175 shot in second gear. But mine has a little more done to it that just nitrous. Watch out for some of these mudstains. That's why I have the best of both worlds, a TTA, 91 GT and my Tahoe to tow both of them around.
See ya at the races.

You should take him out in NA mode w/out many problems. The 230hp TPI was the GMs answer to the mustang dillema. The 90GT was 215hp, i beleive. I race various stangs all the time. I only get beat by heavily(IMO) modded ones. One guy in my area I race(he looses) all the time. I asked him what what he did to the car and he ran off a list of stuff.I said "with all that, you should win already"

The mustangs did come with 215 hp. They do have a slightly higher redline though at 5900 rpm. Their autos have low gearing but their T5s have higher gearing.

I say you go pick a fight with him. Wait for the headers and teach that 4.9 litre mustang a lesson. The ram air setup will only give him at most 20 hp at the engine. You also have a huge mileage advantage over his tired and old engine(unless he's had a rebuild). He probably burns oil for 5 minutes when he starts up his car (maybe a little exaggerated). The mustang will maybe hit 0-60 in 6.8 seconds (if all conditions are good) and your setup could easily hit 0-60 in 6.5 seconds in bad conditions. The mustangs are really quick off the line (only the manuals, with their 3.35 first gear) but they die off quickly after that. Don't worry about that mustang chump, take him out with your 5.0 TPI.
(An interesting note: Motor Trend in 1991 tested a '92 GT Mustang 4.9 litre equipped with the auto trans and only managed an 8 second 0-60 time. They also tested the same car with the T-5 and hit a 0-60 time of 7 seconds, a full second better)

You might better be careful. The 87-88 stangs were the fastest ones out there due to their speed density(if they had the 5spd and 3.08 rear gears). It should be a close race though. I had a 87' police stang that went 14.04 @98mph in the 1/4 mile with a broken posi and a 2.04 60ft time. My fastest 3rd gen is my 1991 1LE Z28(for sale), and it has gone 13.90 @99mph. Let us know what happens, it will be interesting. Does your car in fact have the dual converters and 3.42 gears? Good luck.
Phaze you're right those mustangs with the speed density systems are fast. I don't think our friend should have too much of a problem.
PS Those police stangs are quick. I know a texas '87 highway patrol stang and it is quick. Like 14.2 in the 1/4.

the 88 mustang GT can easily hit high 13's with a good tune up, free mods (bumped timing, removed silencer, cut out maf screen) and 3.08 gears. Just so that you know the 87-92 stangs were rated 225 hp, not 215. It weighs less than a 3rd gen as well. Should be a good race if he can drive at all.

nothing special was included with the 5.0 police package mustangs. It was just your basic 5.0. Both cars I feel should be real close in a race. All of my 5.0's stock have ran 14.04 to 14.35 at 96-98mph. All of my stock 1991-1992 Z28's with the 350/auto have ran 13.90 to 14.3 at 95.5-99mph. Now one time I had a 91' B4C with the 350/auto and it ran 14.30 at 96 but with a few mods like underdrive pullies, airfoil, flowmaster catback, removed bumps in plenum, fresh tune-up w/ 8*timing it ran 14.09 at 100.86 so it improved almost 5mph in the 1/4 on hard Gatorback tires. Try some of those mods to. Cheaper and less of a pain to install than headers. Also try some drag radials so you can launch hard to.
Just for reference, the GT stang's curb weight comes in at 3400 pounds and the LX's curb weight is 3200. The IROC's curb weight is 3400 pounds so its actually closer than people think. I made a mistake about the hp numbers. The 215 I had in my mind was from the earlier mustang GT H.O.s
