It depends if you mean reaction time or your launch (as seen in your 60-foot time). If you meant reaction time, that doesn't matter in regular Test-n-Tune. If you meant in how you're launching, that plays a big part in your 1/4-mile time. From what I've seen and experienced for our kind of cars, a tenth of a second reduction in your 60' time give .14-.16 of second reduction in your 1/4-mile time. If you get better traction by using Drag Radials or some sort of stickier tires, you can gain even more if you've been spinning your tires on the 1-2 shift.

The start can make all the difference.

I ran a 15.24@93.2mph with my 0-60mph time 6.73 seconds.

Later I ran a 17.74@98.2mph with a 0-60mph time of 6.26 seconds. That's my best run ever and I'm well happy as I'm running a 305 with very little done to it. It was a VERY cold day though, so that would have helped a little.

Good luck though

Rob

I'm assuming you meant a 14.74 or something there RMK...

But yeah, your start can make alot of difference. At the strip your 60' is all that really matters as far as ET, but if you give the guy you're racing enough of a head start (with reaction time) he will still cross the line before you even if you ran a better time. On the street your reaction time matters alot. Actual ET doesn't matter there, it's who gets to the finish line first. Your launch still comes into effect on the street as well. Obviously if you are spinning too much while the other guy is accelerating you would blow any bit of a reaction jump you may have had, or dig yourself deeper into a hole if they other guy jumped you...

What cars were you racing? Because even w/ the best of starts you are in danger of losing to quite a few imports w/ a 16.1 1/4 mile time...

I lost to a 96 nissan alima only has an exhaust. i lost to a 97 integra by only one car length, it is heavily motified, then i lost to a 1998 v-6 firebird also heavily motified. the funny thing is that the altima beat me the most, by two car lenghts

I dont think the V6 bird that beat you was heavily modified. No offense, but your car just isn't that fast. The V6 birds run mid 15s/low 15s.

I have an 88 IROC and it used to have the same motor that's in your car, a TBI 305. Bone stock with open element air cleaner my best was a 16.11 so you're in the same ballpark as me. The car was very consistent though. After a total of 11 passes, they all ranged from 16.11 to 16.15. It made a killer bracket car but was too slow for me so the first thing I did was pull the motor and build a new one with a tpi.

'88 IROC TPI 355, fully balanced, 9.75:1 compression, fully ported '70 truck heads(for now), Harland Sharp Roller Rockers, Comp Cams TPI cam, fully ported '90 speed density TPI with '86 base so it fits older style heads, Crane AFPR, Flowmaster 3in. exhaust, Edelbrock TES headers, all emissions equipment is still intact, plan on burning my own chips, many more mods and parts on the way as time and money permits =(
Best E.T. with TBI 305: 16.11 @ 82mph
Haven't been to track with new motor
Won bracket races at Numidia Raceway with my '70 Nova
In memory of Dale Earnhardt, I'll miss cheering for that black #3 on raceday!!!

a bad launch will hurt a lot, by the same token though a good launch will help a lot. i run 14.2's at just over 94mph. most guys run that kind of et at least 2 full mph faster. but i get out of the hole better so i can get there just as quick with out having the mph. i am correcting the mph thing though

The V-6 had headers, flowmaster exhaust and a intake. It only had me by two car lenghts at the most.

The first 60' are the most important ones on the entire 1/4 mile. Fix your traction first, then add more power.

Sounds like it was a 3.4L then. My friend's bone stock 98 ran a 15.2, and he still even has the paper air filter.
