Finally got to the track. Good and Bad news

Saturday was a rain out. Sunday was the first race of the season and conditions were almost perfect. Cool, very low humidity and a fairly good barometer.

First time trial pass only got a 11.65. No time for test and tunes since this was a race day. The shift light was coming on just after the finish line so I bumped up the shift point 100 rpm to 6400.

Second pass 11.506
Third pass 11.449
Forth time trial run I ran a 11.382 but the car wasn't feeling right. It was running hot and getting hard to start.

First round of eliminations. I won just after I came out of the hole against a red light so I ran it right out to the end with a 1.442 (engine was getting too hot).
Second round of eliminations I pushed the car through the staging lanes until I was ready to go to the burn out box. Again I won just out of the hole against a red light and ran it out to a best of 11.242 but that's the end of the good news. While I was decelerating after crossing the finish line the engine sounded bad then quit. I coasted to the return road and flagged for the tow truck. The car wouldn't start. I couldn't make the call for the third round since I broke something in the engine.

Towed the car home and used a high amp charger to try starting the car. It cranked slowly but there was a lot of drag on the starter. Not good.

I haven't pulled the engine yet but I suspect I spun a bearing and a con rod is sticking on the crank or seized a piston. Either way it won't be ready to race in 2 weeks. The new engine performed as well as I expected. I was predicting 11.3-11.5 and my best times are now in the sig below

Great times Steve!! Man that engine is stout, even with a tight bearing it hauls!

Sad to hear about the motor. I was looking forward to monitoring your progress this season. I hope you are back to racing it soon. I pray that the block is not damaged beyond repair. Keep us posted and good luck!

The machine shop is pretty busy right now. I still hope to have everything done and the car running in time for the Fathers Day race. The block needs to be sleeved. I have a new piston ordered. A new con rod needs to be polished, shot peened and resized then balanced with the new piston. Once the new piston arrives, all 8 will have to be flycut to allow valve clearance.

The head is scrap metal. The combustion chamber is cracked to much to be welded. There's a big crack in the intake port. It's even cracked under the valve seat. I can get another head from the machine shop. After I do all the port and polishing, send it back to get the valves and springs set up.

I wish I was racing this weekend. The air is really good. Software tells me my first pass could be a theoretical 11.12 based on my previous best performance.

Parts wise it's not too bad but it's the waiting for parts and machine work that's going to take time.
