First time out at the track
Ok some background for those of you who haven't been following my adventures in getting my car running etc. I just bought the car, haven't done anything besides maintainance (changed oil/fuel filter/matched rear tires to the front)
These are my timeslips for Friday. First time out, haven't had the car tuned or anything, pretty crappy if you ask me ;-) I was running on Firestone Firehawk ss20s at 33psi (didn't have a pump to lower then raise pressure) and was running on 94 octane gas.
At least I was consistant ;-) Hopefully I'll be able to decrease the times... Anyone have any suggestions on how to improve them? I want to clean out my cat but it seems to be welded to my exhaust :-/ Other than that anything quick and cheap that anyone would suggest?

What you can do to improve those times depends a lot upon what kind of emissions tesing/inspection you have to endure. First, though, take care of the tuneup: Are the plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor in good shape? A thorough tuneup can do wonders.
Do you know the altitude at the track? I ran a 16.86 last night with my LG4 and open element air cleaner at 5800' and poor air (low density from barametric pressure, high temperature and humidity). That's 15.64 corrected to sea level.
With the HO, you already have the good air cleaner - a better flowing element should be considered (I really like my AMSOIL air filter). You might see some gains by advancing the base ignition timing a few degrees and putting in different secondary rods and/or hanger.
Your exhaust is pretty good, but headers with 3" y-pipe and 3" cat & catback will also help it.
Do you know what your rear end gears are? I'd guess 3.23's, but 3.73's will help a good bit. Posi a must.
After that, you're looking at getting into the engine - intake manifold, cam, heads. And, traction problems, so lower control arms, poly bushings, LCA mount relocation, etc.
Before some wise guy says it, I'll say "get a 350". The GM 350 HO Conversion Kit is pricey, but gets the job done (13's).
In bracket racing, RT's in the 1.'s and fourteen hundreths difference between runs will kill you. Especially the RT, but that's a matter of practice (try leaving when you see the last yellow light up).
Good luck, and have fun!
