My first 13 second pass

Went to the track a few weeks ago for the first time in over 2 years. Long story, but I only got 1 run in all day and will NEVER be going back to Thompson raceway.
That one run resulted in a 13.5 @ 98.7 MPH on worn out street tires, stock heads/cam/tranny, and retarding timing all the way down the track, due to needing a tune touch up. I know it has low 13's in it, maybe even high 12's after some adjustments and some decent tires.
What do you guys think I can get it down to? My mods are in my cardomain link in my siggy.

Re: My first 13 second pass

Looks great considering this was your first and only pass of the day...

I can see you easily getting that down to a low 13... Maybe touch high 12's on a good day.

Re: My first 13 second pass

Thanks Bully. I'm hoping the weather cooperates so I can make a log file and get my tune fixed, then hit the track again with my buddies drag radials and see what happens, before the season ends.

Re: My first 13 second pass

I don't see 12's in your future without some more power. 98mph is hard to get 12's out of without a insane launch.

I see low 13's, but no 12's without a power upgrade or big traction/launch upgrade.

Think about it this way, you already have a 1.9 60'f and you are running 13.5 @ ~99mph. Because of your lack of power from the 8th to the 1320 you won't pick up that much speed at all. So thats effectively a dead zone for you. Without more power you can't improve the back half.

So all of your improvements have to come before the 8th marker.

Formul8's old car was running 13.00000000x's all day long the last I saw it at 100mph trap speeds with slicks and a vig 3200 stall. The 60'fts were either mid 1.6's or very low 1.7's.

Its gonna be a tough road without more power.

**** BTW, you should add some tags to your video so it shows up in thirdgen.org or F-body related searches.

Agreed that is a very impressive ET for 98 mph. My 89 Iroc with an L98 runs almost 95 mph in the 1/4 and is over a full second slower.

Re: My first 13 second pass

My bad, the day Formul8's old car was running it never broke 100mph, it was 99.x's all day long for the trap speed. I don't think it ever broke into the 12s. Its been 6 years and I don't have any video from that track rental.

My car was running a 13.35 @ 102.8mph on a 1.97 60'. I was running on crappy Kuhmo Supra Ecstas. My 8th trap speeds were in the 81-83mph.

Most cars running 13's or higher pickup 20mph or so from the 8th to the 1320. You in fact picked up 20.2mph.

Re: My first 13 second pass

I have more power, it's just not there right now. I did some logs today, and my timing is retarding up to 6 degrees under load all the way from 3,800 RPM to redline. I will be making a 20 minute log tomorrow, and then emailing it to pcmforless so they can work it out and send me a new tune.

Re: My first 13 second pass

I dont think 6* total timing is going to make THAT huge of a difference. But every little bit counts I guess.

I ran it at Cordova dragway with the LT1 knock module and had about 6* knock retard on average.

Then I switched to the LT4 knock module and the knock retard disappeared.

Overall? I gained 1mph. Most of my ET improvements came from learning how to heat the tires and launch the car. The Trap didn't make much difference in the end.

Re: My first 13 second pass

The timing was only one of the issues, and everything combined is costing me. Like 22K mile cheap tires at wear bars, a tune that was done without even seeing the car or any data on it, ETC.. I also had my own thing done to the fuel and timing since it knocked either way, and I never got to play with any of it or get my launch down, thanks to them only giving me one pass for my money.
If things go as planned the car will lose 5-10 lbs., get a tune based on actual data, and I'll borrow my buddies drag radials to hit the track with next Friday.

Re: My first 13 second pass

I know Orr ran a 12.9 with full boltons... If you get everything dialed in, slicks, and a good cool day, I can possibly see a 12.9... I don't see if happening anytime soon though! Also, 5-10 pounds isn't going to do much at all for you. Try disconnecting the front sway next time, you are really going to have to cut a great 60ft time.

You will need some decent weight loss before you go 12s. You've got 5/10ths to go.

I wish you luck, I just think its just out of reach. At our power levels whatever gains you make have to be done by the 330ft mark. When I was running my GTA with the LT1/Auto my ET was pretty much determined before it shifted into 2nd gear. Now with a 6spd manual I have plenty more places to screw up and lose time.

Re: My first 13 second pass

Don't worry guys, I got this. I'm not a newb and am a firm believer in the "little things that count". Friday is going to be a hell of a nice day for some times, according to the current reports. I checked it out on a DA calculator, and I should be running at 3-600 ft next Friday depending on actual conditions, compared to the 1729 ft. I was in on the 13.5 pass. I will also be at my home track, where I am comfortable and already own a speed record with my Subaru. That on top of a few fixes and tricks, and I think I'm gonna come damn close.
