finally got into the 8s! on radials
well went to the track and finally got this past years goal done on the 30th lol. I went 8.98@155 on a 275/60 drag radial. motor is still with a stock truck 350 block. I was selling it (https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/engi...s-my-drag.html) but no one wanted it lol. so went and made some fun passes. itll run a 8.6x@159-160 if i got the front end down.. which i did on the last pass but third gear gave out i believe

He'd be ahead of the curve if he just put a swapped the VB to a "2nd gear leaver" so that he could put more rear gear in & launch in 2nd. - A lot of the fast radial cars are figuring that out now, it's especially helpful with a small-block/nitrous combo that doesn't have enough HP to really pull the steep rear gears up top that are required down low to control the launch.

Couldnt you just leave on a progressive hit and tweak suspension abit more? Does it have front end limiters?
Leaving in 2nd and just adding more rear gear will lower the launch ratio but that more gear will run out of top end rpm. Not sure what you turn for rpm but you may start to over rev and need to stay on limiter for abit at the traps

i did mess with the progressive and thats how it left so well on the last pass. however that track I was at is hit or miss. the car usually leaves perfect but with that track you have to loosen up the suspension a lot to get it to hook.
the Th400 is perfect for this small motor i have. it really doesnt have the power like shagwell said to run a glide.
Re: finally got into the 8s! on radials
OSW is a lot more miss than hit.....
The longer you have to delay the progressive the more you are leaving on the table.
Many of the glide loving drag radial guys are starting to figure out the typical 1.80 low glide is not the ticket, especially with nitrous combo that doesn't have the back-half HP of a boosted motor. - Several companies working on steeper glide ratios, but LOTS of guys already switching over to the 2-speed "turbo glide" type trans.
Limiting front travel is often a band-aid for a radial car, better off if you can let it hang but slow it way down with the shocks so that it takes 1+ seconds before getting to full droop. Allows enough transfer at the hit w/o having any abrupt shock of weight that is likely to break the tires loose after the initial hit.

Re: finally got into the 8s! on radials
Nice tips thanks. Plan on trying a 275 radial with a brake on my turbo car once its back together
Re: finally got into the 8s! on radials
2 speed th400 will work good too. if you tried everything and are having to remove power to keep it off the bumper, you can stand less gear off the line, imo.
as stated also, front shocks are a BIG part of it. limiters are a band-aid.

there is one person that has posted on here before that had the th400 figured out pretty dang well in x275. he was running a 4.10 gear and had it down into the 1.23-1.25 range. he has since switched to a glide and last i talked to him he said the car liked the change.

Re: finally got into the 8s! on radials
you dont necessarily have to buy afcos or santhuffs.... if you can find a talented shock tuner, you can get better results working with a cheap shock than an out of the box expensive shock.
the better setup is to have all your travel available to you, and controll the extension. with limiters, the car comes up too fast and snaps to a dead stop. if you could slow down that first 2-3" of travel before they hit the limiter, the tires might not even come off the track.

Thats a cool car...i know my buddy switched to santuffs and it was total night and day even with the limiters!
Too expensive for me...but all of the local x275 guys run them now for that reason. Im sure a qa1 valved to your car would be just as effective!! Good luck when the trans is fixed!!!
