Anyone here do American Iron road racing?

Does anyone here run in the NASA sanctioned American Iron class with their thirdgen?

It's a pretty neat class with pretty loose rules, and they are the fastest race group in NASA. I have been driving a 1990 BMW 3 series for driver's education (to get a competition racing license) and haven't decided on a chassis/class to race in yet and am intrigued by the American Iron. The Spec e30 class my current car is legal for is one of the slowest race groups, only followed by Spec Miata.

Here is a link to the NASA site...

and here are the rules...

In short, you are limited to tire size, horsepower to weight ratio (9.5:1), track width, must weigh at least 2700lb (NA v8) or 2400lb (v6 turbo/supercharged/NA) post-race with driver and a few limitations on ride height/aerodynamics size.

I see a lot of Mustangs out there (fox body up to new), and couple 5th gen Camaros, but have not seen a thirdgen f-body yet - any f-bodies actually.

Just to give you an idea what these cars are doing, here's an in car video of American Iron, my friend in his sn95 Mustang (~280whp/2700lb)...

and here's a video of me on the same track in the BMW (148whp/2770lb)...

and my buddy's fully prepped race BMW (158whp/2700lb)...

as you can see, the smaal IRS cars whip through the corners, but being a lower powered car, we are often flat out, where the AI class have to feather the throttle.

I don't know of any AI 3rd genners offhand, but I do have half a dozen CMC cars running our wheels - a lot of 3rd gens run there.

One of my racers told me that a lot of CMC guys move up to AI (typical upward move), but a lot prefer CMC due to that series' rules. They all run on the track at the same time at events usually.

Check out this pic - the white CMC 3rd gen (one of our customers) up in the AI 4th gen's butt.

Yeah, NASA runs all the race groups together here in the Florida Region as well (three pace cars on the field). I have yet to see a 4th gen here, either. I'm guessing they use Mustangs and 5th gens f-bodies for the IRS as a solid axle isn't as friendly on the twisties.

Hopefully more will chime in. Watched hours of video yesterday and still on the fence as to what platform our race car will be. The AI group are going faster in the straights, slower in the corners and they look like they are more of a handful to drive.
