Some 1/8th mile build questions
Long time no hear, got out of the whole F-Body thing to pursue other interests.
A customer/buddy wants me to set him up a 88 Formula L98 to run 1/8th mile. I dont have alot of experience with 1/8th mile, mostly Im a 1/4 mile guy. His goals for the build are as follows.
100mph 1/8th mile trap speed
Able to drive to the track
AC/PS/Brakes
100+ passes with minimal issues
Wants to stay a 350 (I have no idea why, Im going to try to talk him into letting me go 383)
Th350 Transmission w/brake
How much power will I need for a bad driver to trap 100mph? Im going to build a motor and spray about 150hp to start and hope I dont need drastically more. The basic setup Im considering is a 355 with Trickflow 23 heads, 9.5:1 compression, xe276HR cam, a single plane and 750cfm carb.
Thoughts?

Re: Some 1/8th mile build questions
By the time you reach the 1/8 mile mark, you should already be in high gear. The last 1/8 mile is just a high gear, brute HP pull to the 1/4 mile mark.
Unless you're trying to do something really special, just build it like any other car for 1/4 mile. If it was track only then that would be different.
100 MPH in the 1/8 with only a 350 and some NOS is going to be pushing it. I don't have my calculator available but I'm guessing you need at least a 10 second (1/4 mile) street car. Probably need to run around 6.8s in the 1/8 to hit 100 mph. That's going to need a lot of power or a lot of weight reduction.
My low 9 second race car does the 1/8 at 120 mph and I'm set up perfectly for the 1/4 mile.

Re: Some 1/8th mile build questions
Whats the car weigh?
Typical 3400 lb setup will need 500 whp to tickle 100 mph
My 383 made 392whp on motor and 150 shot which may have done 100-120 whp, went 103mph.
Thats doable on a 355, but i would run bigger cam than that and wouldnt mind seeing afr or profiler 195's over the trick flows unless you plan on doin some minor portwork. I would run 10.5:1 comp and a xe282hr or so. Good dual spring like the afr 8017-8019's.
Gear up abit and with 4000 stall it should do ok

Re: Some 1/8th mile build questions
Thanks for the help so far guys. I was kinda suspecting that I was going to need more power than what I originally planned but wasnt sure. I guess Ill have to make some tweaks to the setup then.
Hey Justin, long time buddy. I ended up selling the black car. I have a 500whp Duramax, a LS1 Formula, and a 4wd VW Jetta thats being setup for well over 600whp.

FWIW...My setup goes 95mph N/A @~2950 lbs. that is with a DA of around 4500' IIRC
10:1 360 sbc
215 old style Dart Iron Eagles
Single Plane HVH intake
XR292 cam
750 BG alky carb
TH400 with 9.5" ~3800 RPM stall speed
4.71 gears and 28 x 10.5 stiff sidewall slicks

Re: Some 1/8th mile build questions
350 lt1 stock shortblock ~11.0:1
Cnc ported stock heads
236/248 hydro roller
Single plane efi with a plate
Th400/ 3.89 gear. 9.5" converter
275 drag radials
3050-3100lbs with driver
Would normally run 94-95mph n/a, 112ish with 100 shot, and 114-115 with 150 shot.

Re: Some 1/8th mile build questions
I'll be the first to say it. Why not swap a carbd 5.3 with a 150 shot. In my full weight driven to the track streetcar, I've gone 6.90@102 many times. It's a simple swap and it works.
