Racing in an automatic?
ya i kinda have the same question....i just bought a racing tranny ad ave bee experimenting with shifting 1-2-D-OD or just starting off D.... I know when i put it in OD my car is way sluggish so i never leave it in OD, but i dunno to shift it manually or just leave it in drive? Manually shifting feels like it has more torque bu i migh just be imagining things
First never nver start in od...
start in first..power brake just enough, where the wheels arent spinning..but ready to go....shift into 2nd about 4,000rpm..
into drive at 4,500 rpm...If your car can handle it..dont bother with od..whne you switch into od your cars speeed is going to drop just enough to screw your et time

shift at 4000!!!??................thats great for getting good gas mileage or driving ms. daisy but this is the drag race board. Prolly shift at around 5000 - experimenting with 200 rpm incriments until times get worse.

j/k
on my car its better that way
If you're running a stock 305... the engine isn't going to be making power past 4000 rpm. From first to second (if you have the 700r4,) you're gonna want to shift later at about 4500 though, because of the huge difference in gears between first and second (let the engine go past its power redline in order to start second higher in the power band.) 5000 on a stock 305 is not going to make any usefull power.

No no, I mean yours.......Its no slouch peanut cammed 305 that cant rev( no offense NJ Speeder). I guess by "mean", Im saying that you have a pretty healthy exhuast (headers would be nice) and I assume you did some intake work to compliment that. With these mods you should redline around 5200 -5300.

Thanks! :lala:
Once my raise kicks in, I'll be looking at getting some SLP 1 3/4" headers; based on the consumer reports I've read, they're best for my car. I'd like to get a Cold Air Intake going on too, right now it doesn't have one (
), but that's ok.
That's what I've learned to like about the SBC; its aftermarket is huge, and, ironically, even though GM under-rated the engines, that's not really a bad thing, since it (secretly?) left a ton of room for scalability.
