OK I need help on my launch and some other things

Actually, I have two, kinda related questions:

Question #1. What is the best way to start a burnout in my 82 Z28? I have a 305 auto with Posi. Is it better to start in first, RPM's up to 5K, then to second, RPM's to 5k, then to drive and slowly release brake? Or, just start in drive? I tried the gear thing on the 4th and it didn't seem like I had the torque needed.

Question #2. When racing someone from the line, should I drop the gears for better traction or just leave her in drive?

OK, I guess I have a 3rd question: If going about 35 MPH and some loser in a VW Jetta (or whatever it was)cuts me off and I want to romp on him, is it going to kill my tranny if I throw her into 2nd or should I just lay on the gas? My carb is acting up (no, I'm not going EFI)so my response time kind sucks right now but I want to know what the best way to handle this is without trashing on my car.

Thanks.

Out of all the "trial runs" I have made and the racers for the magazines, the best way to launch the car for racing, is to just put it in D (not OD! Evidently different fluid flows within the tranny), apply the brakes hard, rev the engine to about 1500 rpm, and when you are ready to go (last yellow light) release the brakes, and feather the gas (to keep traction) until it's floored! I've always been able to force the shift around 4500rpm by a slight lift of the accelerator and punching it again. That will keep you in the torque/power curve of the engine, but still prevent loss of traction. From there on, just hold on and enjoy the ride watching the scenery pass by!!

For just doing a burn out, DON'T put it in Neutral, rev, then drop in gear!! That will mess it up fast!! You should be able to light the tires with the braking technique easily! You shouldn't even have to rev very high, until the wheels start spinning, then you want to get lots of heat in the tires! Just keep an eye on the yellow/redline on the tach! It will go high, fast! Don't want to blow the engine just doing a burnout, do you??!!!

Hope this helps!!

Paul

What about if I start out in 1st? Or is Drive better? drive works fine for me, but someone recommended I start in 1st, then build up but I couldn't do it.

No. That's why I'm asking. I would be in big trouble with the hubby if I did that. Then again, all the more reason for a 350. But still, I don't like to trash on my car if I don't have to.

Summer you do good burnouts for now as it is... your tires just have a lot of bite to them compared to what everyone else has (like Lance's tires n stuff hehehe)

Then what about this? I'm not a sore loser, it's the thrill of the race that gets me going. But I'd like to make sure I'm getting what I can from my car. Don't want to lose to a Cabriolet if I don't have to.

Dude, I cannot put that Edelbrock 750 cfm carb on my 305.

Doesn't need the tune up. I did that when it needed it. Cap/rotor, plugs, wires, etc.

It's the stock QJ. And it sucks.

Hey now, remember I now have wide 16" tires on there instead of the narrow 15"ers and they are Z rated to boot with a sticky 145 treadwear rating. There may not be a whole lot of tread there, but they are still legal. Of course I do have an open rearend...

Summer, you could always get a V6 Crista's gonna kick your Z butt with her birdy, hehehe j/k

Not if I can help it! I know I've got her until she learns to drive that thing. TGFM's!!

It will be fun to race her, though. Nothing wrong with a bit of Cascade Crew Sibling Rivalry.

hum carb carb carb carb get a Edle Brock 1406 600 cfm carb w/ the electric choke I put one of these on my oldsmobile ( 83 delta 88 w/ the computer controlled carb ) I hooked up the choke but left the computer relay ( plug on the drivers side of the carb ) off and it ran fine. when I needed it to pass emmissions I would tune it back almsot to the point of running to lean after emissions jsut crank it back up to where it was before just remember how many turns you turn the needle valves and I also took a sharpie and maked where it was so the lines lined up and jsut rememberd how many turns I turned them in and when I turned them back out I did the same amount and then I would line the lines back up.

I am glad Jesse is such a good Moderator and keeps these posts on subject!

Anyway, summer, you've seen my burn outs... just put it on Drive and floor it. Don't worry about shifting into 2nd or something. The idea behind a burn out with street tires to just clean them off from all the crud and get them a little warm... overheat them and they are all oily and slick... in the bad way.

Yeah, and NO Neutral drops... unless you want to drop your tranny while you are at it. I did it once in my V-6 when I didn't know better... and ouch... it made a horrid noise and I never did that again.

And nobody gets to woop Christys butt until I do in my V-6! That Firebird owes me a race, I never got to race it under Jesses control, so I will have to settle with racing a girl... sigh...

wha???

Now come on Doug we all now there is something way up with you supposed '3.1' plus you're lighter and have some goodies, so don't pick on the 2.8's so much.

And for burnouts, I just put it in 1st and watch the revs... For the stick guys I think what Lance did proably works the best, rev up well into power band - drop clutch to break loose - hit breaks to do the stationary part...

You're too kind to us. But you don't have to wash it. When we get her home, we're going to detail and wax it. Not that it needs it, it's such a clean car.

What I really want to know is what mods are you and your uncle planning with all that cash?? You're getting the money a few days before you leave, so...better start planning!

I'm still gonna wash it for you And I can return to you your steering wheel puller I meant to return when we met in Stanwood so Crista could drive the car.

HAHAHA my unlce promote go fast mods?! That will be they day - when my uncle helps me plan a mod... But, no mods are planned with the $ from the 89 unless you count paying down the loan or credit card a mod. But me, well the first thing is first - the next few checks will be saved for a 5-speed equipted parts car. Then LCA's/Subframes... Then saving for the BIG mod 400 SBC

Jess
