Question about HSR tune
Hey all,
First off, let me say that I realize that this may be (is?) a bit of a screwball question, but please bear with me a bit...
Finally got the HSR installed on the car, & I've gotta say, the engine just seems to zing right up to the rev limiter now, as opposed to going "soggy" at around 5000. If you would've asked me before this last week, I would've said that the intake had given me a noticeable reduction in my quarter-mile times. Unfortunately, the timeslips that I got last week don't show the improvement that I'd expected.
I know that my "state of tune" is definitely off, but since I don't have a scantool or WBO2, it's pretty tough to tell where I'm at. So, I have to ask some of you guys, what does an HSR-equipped L98 typically like? More fuel than before, or less? More initial spark timing, stock, or back it off a bit? When installing the dizzy, we'd set it to an initial 8* BTDC, but that was just guesswork on my part. Here's a short/basic summary of my combo (at least the major stuff):
* CAI w/ K&N and descreened MAF (& most of the free mods);
* HSR intake (w/ AFPR);
* 24# injectors;
* Stock heads, but milled .005", & 3-angle valve job;
* Stock short-block (inc. cam);
* SLP 1.75" headers, high-flow 3" cat & 3" exhaust;
* MSD 6AL;
and maybe a couple of other little things that I can't think of off-hand. I know that one of the big things that's probably hurting me are the 24# injectors, if I could get the injector constant set for those, I'm sure it'd help a lot - but right now, I'm stuck with "tuning by the seat of my pants".
I'd set the fuel pressure down slightly (from 43 psi to 41) in an attempt to compensate for the larger injectors at WOT, I figured that the O2 sensor would handle the part-throttle fueling adjustments.
Yes, I know that the "correct" answer for this is to buy all of the equipment, learn to tune, & burn my own PROM - but there's a chance that I could be driving a different car before long, & until that gets settled, I'm a bit leery of spending money on this... All I'm really looking for at this point is to make the best use possible of my current combo (for the rest of this summer), & -hopefully!- make a hell of a dent in my times. (Part of my problem is also that I'm not getting great traction off the line, but I'm hoping to have LCA RBs before too long to help w/ that...)
Anyone out there able to offer up some reasonable/ballpark suggestions for me? Thanks guys.

Re: Question about HSR tune
a custom chip would definately help and is realllly easy to do. just need to buy like a cheap chip programmer and the moates zif socket chip adapter for your ecm. i'm running the Burn1 burner from Moates and his socket adapter. 80 for the burner and like 35 for the chip adapter with 2 chips.
here is what was best for my HSR L98. I set base timing to 8 degrees, which is 2 degrees advanced over stock. It liked that the best. I have stock 22 lb injectors so i set the fuel pressure to near 50psi WOT since i figured i'd be lean at high rpms. I dyno'd the car at 246 whp at stock timing and near 50psi fuel pressure and i was abit rich after 5000rpms. from 4000-5000 it was near perfect air fuel. so backed the pressure back to 46 psi or so at WOT or 40-41 psi at idle with vacuum line plugged in. Car ran strong.. ran 13.58 at 98.xx in the summer on a 1.82 60 foot. TPI best before in the winter was 13.63 at 97 on a 1.75 60 foot. So i gained some top end for sure.
next i changed the timing tables a tad in the chip. just made my max timing at WOT come in sooner at a lower rpm. instead of 4400-4500 rpms, i made timing come in at 3600rpms. Car liked it. picked up a tenth and a mph. so far my best is 13.46 at 99.6 on a 1.78 60 foot.
It really help to have injector constant set to 24 in the chip. but i'd just reduce fuel pressure for now down to around 42 psi WOT or so. Play with it to see how it feels. your motor may need more fuel up top. Mine didnt but all setups are different. timing i'd leave at 8 degrees base if your not doing chip tuning.

Re: Question about HSR tune
Thanks guys, your help is much appreciated. I can probably afford $110 or so before racing season ends, maybe I'll give that a shot.
EDIT: Orr89RocZ, is there any way you might be able to send me the .bin you created, so that I could maybe use that as a starting point? Thanks!

Re: Question about HSR tune
yeah i could send you what i used. i modified Fan turn on temps and TCC lockup speeds to fit my driving patterns and thermostat that i have in the car.
That stuff you can change out easy to fit whatever you want, or else i can set those to stock and just run the timing table stuff i created which is also simple to do.
