Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection
To me it looks like stock. It has no fancy Y pipe, it runs along the stock rout and the hangers, and it has the pipe for the AIR system. No cat. Duel outlet. Thats the only part i am questionable abt its curcular but angled cut. So it's pointy. Ohh and it's completely rusty. I almost lost the back half, lol. Good think I fixed it before it happened.
I just wanted to see what u guys thought, I want to replace the whole stystem from headers back, but i mean right now it doesn't sound that horrible in person.
I am down to magnaflow, hooker, or the really expensive GMMG chambered. borla is really cool but too loud, especially for autocross, 89db or less. actually can you adjust it to be much quieter, close to stock?? i cant seem to find any vids of it being much quieter, correct me if i am wrong...
Not sure which headers to go with each system yet. Is there a set of shorties or midies that perform and sound the same as a set of long tubes? I am defiantly leaning more towards magnaflow, after reading some. I want it to be quiet when I don't step on it (like windows closed crusing) but when I do i want it to sound good and also idle like a bigblock from the 60s. I could do a cut out......
Don't need a cat or air system. If the parts are resonably priced maybe on higher side I'll go for it but really expensive No plus it reduces what I can do later on.

Has anybody routed a 3" system over the axle I'd like to know if it's been done before I try. I really like the sound of my car just don't like the echo I get from the exhaust being under the car

Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection
A 3" pipe will go over the axle.
I have summits chambered exhaust in the stock position with duel tips. I put a classic chambered the short one, 25" I think. Where the cat is suppose to go. It sounds really good. Much quieter at the low rpms. The only rpm where it makes the most noise is 1500rpm. That's the only rpm where it didn't get quieter. The muffler like amplifies the sound rather dampen it.
Overall the system has really good sound throty and low grumble.

i am having the hardest time finding a shop here in iowa that will do true due exhaust on my 91 rs with a 305 tbi, whats the best way to get it done? like the routing of the pipe? I'm throwing in the towel and doing this my self with a family friend and his pipe bender, i want it out the back, get back to me soon! thanks!

What are your exhaust requirements from a performance point of view.
Short or long headers.
Diameter of exhaust pipe.
Manual or automatic transmission.
Catalytic convertor(s).
Muffler choice and location.
The best advice is to cruise through all the pictures that have been posted regarding peoples setups. Find something you like and try to copy it.
There are literally hundreds of pictures to look through. Some of them are very professional, others are very budget orientated. One of them is bound to suit your project.

Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection
ill run either 2.25 or 2.5 pipe, no cats, flow master 10s after the axle, auto tranny, and right now no headers, but will be putting on chrome shorties depending on how much some1 is going to charge to put them on, or ill put them on my self if its not a week long job of busting bolts. it has 153,000 miles. just awaiting my checking account to allow me to have my 383 put in and my new built tranny and new rear end and drive shaft. but i hear true duals will decrease my power? i have 150 right now and wanting to ramp it up to 200 for time being.

Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection
i like loud cackly exhaust but it has to have some throaty noise because its a car lol i heard a youtube video of a camaro witha 305 and true duals with flow master 10s and idk what size exhaust but it had the perfect sound i was looking for but i dont want to lose too much power, im buying a chip jet stage 2, headers, exhaust, and making own cold air intake but idk how much hp that will add, any guesses?

If you want to meet the demands of your 383 then there are several options, the simplest of which is the previously described short header/single (3")exhaust or at the other end of the scale is a long tube header with a home built y-pipe that feeds into a single exhaust to a muffler located in the stock location or expanding on that, true duals (your original request) which by all accounts takes a fair bit of fabricating, bending and welding.
Again, there are a lot of pictures available. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

You will absolutely and in no way "lose power" with a performance exhaust. Even the most modest of engines will benefit from a better breathing sustem. All of the mods you mention are all positive moves towards better performance and efficiency. Properly done, you'll probably see a gain in mpg too.

No muffler? Is that a typo? Not loud enough? Nothing will be louder than no muffler.
If it were me and I wanted to be as loud as possible (with a muffler), I'd go for some long tube (or mid length) headers and hang a couple of glass pack mufflers off the end of them.
That'll be LOUD! Cheap too with very little fabrication. When the time comes for your 383, you can step up with a full dual exhaust over the axle if you choose to.
Below are a couple of dual arrangements I've come across. Short tube and long tube styles.

GM built a dual 3" over the axle system on a prototype bigblock 3rdgen car they built many years ago.

Sorry for the krappy scan and bad pix but it was a old black and white story.
Anyway, GMs dual 3" in a bigblock 3rdgen.

is that a red driveshaft? i prefer band clamps myself, but they are triple the price. all depends on what you are aiming towards.

I know it's not pretty "yet" but I haven't seen one done like this , not done with the back yet, almost though
fits like a charm and doesn't hang any lower then the stock exhaust

ive seen it here before and on ls1tech too. dynomax made a kit of some sort to do this, but it needed modification.

mine...a little different...we notched the frame rails with 4" pipe and ran s bends sideways through to put the mufflers off to the side. they are hooker 2210s to 3" s bends into 3.5" dyntatech mufflers

Thank you, It was worth it , it sounds really good ,and I had a bigger issue getting the tips where I wanted them more then building the exhaust it's self . But I'm really happy with how it came out .
