that ground clearance is sweet, I'm thinking of redoing my exhaust. I mean I don't havce problems with clearance, but that tucks up under there pretty nice.

Here is the semi completed version of my exhaust. Within a few months I'm going to cut the mufflers off and continue the exhaust over the axle with some small single chambers at the back of the car.

Showing the ground clearance.

i bent some pipe for a kid here at work on a 91 or 92 rs the other day. i'll try to get some pics, its was true dauls with glasspacks and 2 1/4 pipe. driverside really sucked. he had some mid length headers that made it a real pain also.

For those of us who dump the exhaust before that axle, does anyone else have a problem with exhaust fumes coming into the cab????

Any reason you're not running the block protector plate with your lakewood bellhousing?

I'm not running turn downs yet, but thats my next step. Cheaper than running the exhaust over the axle.

I got the bellhousing used and it didnt have it. I didnt think much of it then, but now my clutch engages/disengages at the very top of the pedal because my hydraulic throwout bearing sits too close to the pressure plate. Its on my short list of things to get soon. I just want to get money for gears too. I figure if I'm tearing everything out, I want to get as much done as possible.

They are a pain to deal with but worth it for the protection. I ended up tack welding the lock nuts to the back of the block plate along the bottom there so I can remove the bolts without fiddling with a wrench...

Do you have any pics of the torque arm mount? I'm lookin to do a set-up like yours and cannot figure out the torque arm mount. I have a T56 and the Spohn crossmember with the torque arm mount on it. Thanks.

Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection
You know whats BS? I was in Frankfort Il, by my girlfriends house, and of course, a deputy with a sheriff in the car, pulled me over for a loud exhaust and gave me a ticket! He was asking me questions about what was and wasn't legal, and he gave me a ticket for loud exhaust! So they told me at court to fix it and bring a receipt for it, and then I'll be threw with that $120 ticket! My ticket for going 35 over in a 40, was only $105! So this was lame and bs. I wasn't even going fast, I was cruising and he was about a block behind me. It was lame.
But that exhaust looks bad ***! I'm thinking of doing side pipes now, so the noise will be going to the side now, but I'll be running no mufflers then, lol!

Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection
Alright guys Ive been searching these pages and really havent seen to many dual setups with longtubes that have 700r4s. I have longtube headers on mine and im trying to find how you routed true duals and got the most clearence. Im gettin my exhaust done over my fall break and am planning to run my exhaust using 3" diameter glass packs with turn downs for now. If you could post of some pics or direct me to some it would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection
Thats 1 3/4" super competetition hookers, with the 3" collector, hedman s bends, because the frames in the way on the passenger side, then into a 2.5" summit h-pipe, and 2.5" pipes to the bullet mufflers, then dumps. My headers cost me $500 and the rest of the exhaust was $170 pretty good deal
Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection
whats up...new guy to the forum but not to cars...lol my question is which is louder on the 87 trans am(350TPI)...40 series or super 40 series?....or which one sound better? all your opinions are greatly excepted thanks

Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection
U have to be careful running dumps under the car man, they sound great, but when cops are near, they notice that its louder. The sound hits the ground, and then the car and it sounds much louder. I got a ticket in frankfort Il, because of my exhaust, its not that loud, it sounds great. This friday I'm going back with a phony receipt that I got it fixed. So I would try to run tailpipes, just so you won't be hassled. They do have in the laws here in illinois, that your supposed to have tailpipes, and exhaust can't dump with in 6" of the gas tank. Which is also bs, but I just thought I'd tell you. I'm beating this ticket, but its still bogus. I'm still keeping my exhaust either way
Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection
im not too worried about the cops in my area....most them have cars louder than mine...lol...i really thought about fabing center exhaust tips under the licene plate...maybe cuttin upintot he bumber a few inches...just an idea..also i herd magnsflow sounds pretty good too what you think?

My mom has a 3" magnaflow cat back on her 89 formula350 It sounds great, but they're kinda expensive, but hers was already on her car when I bought it. I like true duals better

Better is relative, you gotta hear clips and find what you like. Most, if not all traditional style mufflers are going to flow within a couple horsepower of eachother.

Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection
which setup are you talking about? My old H-pipe setup with the stock rear axle? I used a jegster torque arm that mounts to the floor. My most recent setup doesn't use a torque arm because the car has an independent rear suspension now...
Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection
1MeanZ,
I was wondering if you had a picture of the set-up in post #311, but from the backside. Specifically how the crossmember, torque arm mount, safety loop and exhaust all fit in there. Looking to do a set-up like this, but for the life of me i cant figure out how to fit it all in there. It seems like there is always going to be something in the way. Is that a home-made or modified crossmember with the torqure arm mount attached? I have the Spohn crossmember, and the only way it looks like it would work is if i hack it all up.
I've considered the Jegster mount, as it seems like it may solve some of these issue. What did you think of the Jegster mount? Any major positives or negatives?
Thanks

The pix of my setup with my old jegster torque arm are in post 150 (last post in page 3) How well the jegster arm works depends on what you do with the car. it's great for street use and drag use, which is what it's intended for. For autocross and road racing it's not the best. It's too short and can induce brake hop under certain conditions which is a bad thing.
Here is my current setup... https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/exha...setup-you.html

Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection
PM sent back, but incase anyone else is wondering, its all custom made but I did cut up my old Spohn crossmember for the torque arm mount and safety loop. Everything fits very tight and the only reason nothing touches is because I'm using solid motor mounts. This way the exhaust can be mounted only an 1/8" away from the crossmember and mounted solid. My Spohn torque arm had to be shorten 8" as well. Overall it was a fairly involved project and not a first time project. If these welds fail on me, I'm going to be in a world of hurt as my torque arm rips through the trans tunnel. Dont get me wrong though, its nowhere near the level of 1MeanZ's though. His has 100x more fabrication and is much nicer I think.

im running a set of 50" patriot sidepipes from summit racing on my 91 Z28 and they are nice. loudness 7:10, deepness at idle 6.5:10, but full throttle is an eargasm form inside or outside the car. I recommend sidepipes to anyone who is considering an exhaust upgrade. Mine are fully welded from the manifolds back and look sick... only downside = train tracks hate my car

are the pipes welded to the manifold, or do they unbolt?

i will post some pics soon. Just got it done in October of 2010. They are fully welded from manifold to tips. They are shielded sidepipes and look similar to the C2 corvettes pipes, but at the same time very different. The are alarge glasspack design under the shield, where as the corvette was more baffled looking.

Here is my 3" to 2 1/2" exhaust. The 3" was made from mandrel bends which were cut and formed together. After the X pipe they reduce to 2 1/2 and are taken side by side over the axle. In the back it is ran with magnaflows kind like a vette is with muffler location.
Great ride and great inspiration thanks! Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection
Hey guys. I am looking to do a 2.5" dual exhaust. I have a set of hooker headers. My plan is to remove the cat.
I am looking for a list of items that you guys used. For example how many 90 deg pipes and etc. I just want to get an idea. I want everything ready to go once the weather gets warmer so I can start on it.
Thanks

here's one more from the back. I know the mufflers I tucked up pretty far to were the muffler's exit is hitting the axle but there's not a whole lot of room under our cars so it'll have to do for now.Attachment 155908

Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection
Google something like "Massechusets Vehicle Emissions laws". Should take you to a state government site that you can search on to find out what you want. I can say this, any car built with cats, must have them or you are in violation of Federal law. Also, any modification from "Stock" when dealing with emissions is also a federal offence. That said, if they don't do an inspection where you are, you shouldn't have any difficulty doing what you want because what they don't know, doesn't hurt you.

Here is the crap system that I first made when I got my car going. Just needed exhaust and used all scrap pipes that I has laying around and and knock off flowmasters i got from a buddy for 10 bucks. It is now cut up, will be makeing x pipe set up soon.
But it wasnt bad for a $10 system.
