JET Performance Chip (Stage 1 and 2)

Guys-

A friend of mine bought a Hypertech chip for his '87 IROC-Z, and I was pretty impressed by the results....

I want to purchase a chip for my IROC, and I've heard alot of praise for JET chips, but I need to ask a few questions....

1. I've got a chance to buy a Stage 1 chip for a 350, A4 for $100, is this a good deal? Will it work on my car (305, A4)?

2. Should I buy a Stage 1, or Stage 2 chip? My IROC just has some bolt on mods.

3. How easy are these things to install? My friend said it's a 2 minute job, real easy... ??

Thanks

Hey one2fly. How were you impressed with the hypertech? Just curious, faster throttle response, lower 1/4....?

STAGE 2:
Designed for modified vehicles with low restriction exhaust and low temperature thermostat. The JET Stage 2 Performance Chip has been calibrated for peak horsepower in cases where the engine has been modified to run cooler and the exhaust system is less restrictive than original equipment.

So I guess if you have exhaust and a low thermostat stage II is the way to go!

I think......................lol

The chip may start the car but thats about it. You dont want that. You dont even want a JET. The best aftermarket chip on the market is the ED Wright Chip. Ther are 179.99. There good for cars with mild boltons.

Well, he's got an '87 IROC-Z, T-5 (G92) w/ minor mods...

Before installing the chip, he used to be able to rip 2nd gear.... after installing the chip, he was able to rip 3rd gear. I thought that was pretty impressive. His car revs higher and seems to have better idle among other small things.

All in all, for $150, it seemed to be a great investment. I was thinking about getting a chip awhile ago, and kinda lost interest... but after seeing what it did for his car, I want one now.

Thanks for the input

What do you mean?

You mean the 350, A4 chip is incompatible with my 305 car?

The 350 chip is set up for 22lbs injectors while the 305 has only 19lbs injectors. I also think the knock sensor is differant but I may be wrong. Your air fuel tables may be off also.

Well for what it's worth, I tried a jet stage 2 earlier today, just a test while I sorted out a chip problem. I'm mostly stock engine wise, just a catback. Stumbled REALLY bad off idle, sounded like it was drowning out, so I'd say go with stage 1 or Ed Wright if your not willing to do it yourself and burn your own

As for the 19 vs 22 lb injector issue keep in mind that with a speed density system the computer doesn't care what injectors you have as long as the fuel tables are right. A 350 w/22lb injectors is the same proportionaly as a 305 w/19lb injectors hence no problem. MAF it matters though.

I had a re-man ECM and the chip I got did not work. I called them and for free I sent them the chip back and they set it up custom for my car. I had to do the same with the one I put in my Z-24. I like both of them. It did not turn my car in to crazy fast by putting it in-but I do get better gas milage cause the car is tuned more for the way I drive all the time. I'd buy more JET chips if I needed to.

I also just bought a jet stage 2 for my 85 iroc with a 5.0 LB9. i installed it and right away idle in park was great then u shift to Reverse or Drive and it just bogged down and eventually died...but when i got it onto the road it ran like a bat out of Hel*. so would the Stage one be better or use something else?

I bought a stage 2 jet chip years ago, it did nothing for increasing my times. I was pissed when I finally had a chance to look at the bin, basically they added little more timing in the upper RPM something you can do buy just increasing your stock timing.

Re: JET Performance Chip (Stage 1 and 2)

I wouldn't waste the money on anything off the shelf. Jet OR Hypertech. Ed Wright/Fastchips is a little different.

If you're not gonna burn chips yourself, which I can understand, your best bet is to AT LEAST have a chip custom burnt for your car via mail order. A dyno tune is ideal, but it's not always feasible and it's a little more expensive.

These aftermarket chips have been tested again and again, and have been proven to be not much more than a gimmick. Under the perfect conditions, they may offer enough to entice buyers into dropping cash, but real world results come up short. Sure, they do the job, so no need to replace them if you already have one, but I wouldn't go buy one if I didn't already have it.

pcmforless.com did my chip. Smooth idle, more power up top, smoother de-celleration. Just nice all over. Much better than the Hypertech I had in there before.
