turbo question, about down pipes I guess

I was reading one of those old turbo books and I saw that they used these (as best as I could describe) a half ball looking cover over the turbos exhuast port, this allowed them to out a pipe say straight downward from the turbo and save clearence.

This was use done on something like a 280 Z where a normal down pipe would hit the fire wall if they tried to do a nice bend on it.

The "half ball" looking this looked pretty much like a K&N "hat" for a carberator when they do a turbo blow through system, or put a vortech/paxton/ATi super charger on it.

They said this was a decent way to vent the exhuast without effecting the boost too much.

My question is, does anyone have any idea if this still works "well" since the turbos have come a long way in a short time?

I thinkyou mean banjo type dischargers, they work almost as well as straight pipe so no problems there. They are preferred if you otherwise have to make a real sharp bend
