Damn cam?
wow, i get lost when it comes to cams, i know i have anaftermarket roller cam in my 383, but i dont think it is right for the supercharger i have added, how do i pick the right cam? i have s/r torquer heads, lt1 intake will be on soon, headers and an ATI 12psi charger.... currently at 9psi. any ideas of how to get the right cam for me? redline at like 6500rpm
Just call some of the manufactures' and they will help you out. Those heads are a little restrictive for the 383, but the boost will make up for that. In order to sping a hyd roller that fast, you will want to run their recomended spring for sure and possible even a rev kit to keep the valves from floating. Hyd rollers are more apt to float because they are a heavy design and the inertia gained while traveling up the lobe ramp is difficult to control without collapsing the "plunger" from to much spring pressure. Something with around 230 @ .50 intake duration and around 240 @ .50 exhaust duration with a lobe sep around 112-114 would be great.

whats your stall and rear end gear ratio, and do you drive it daily. those things will factor in as the most important things, not necessarily how to make the most horsepower.

ok dont laugh, its a stock stall converter, and 3.73 rear gears. its an on going project, and im sorta in the middle of it. you guys know how it goes, its never fast enough, and there will always be more things to do to it. i said to my self... once i paint it, its done, then i said, once that new 383 is in, im done, then i said, i need a s/c... then im done, then it was the wheels, now i bought an LT1 intake, and im lookin into an SS hod, lowering springs, cam, heads.... it never ends! thanks for the replies fellas! i appreciate it.

ok dont laugh, its a stock stall converter,
Actualy thats not bad, for the street. It means you can keep a nice smooth idle, good fuel economy, etc.. and still have power.
My only concern would be that stock stall converters arn't that tough, and it may explode and take out your transmission with it, given enough torque abuse. But since its an ATI you wont have that "insta-boost" as in a blower application, which will save not only rubber but stress on the converter. Your 3.73's help you ALOT whether you realize it or not, they are the ticket for removing drivetrain stress with a stock converter.
Your only problem will be camshaft selection. A smooth idle will be necessary to keep your converter in check at stoplights, but you want enough to duration to fill your cylinders up top...
I would say DEFINETELY go with a 114 LCA, it will smooth out your idle a little and give you more torque down low. As for duration, on a 383 I would check comp cams for a decent blower cam. Somthing with between 220-224 Duration @ .050 would be nice, and a little more on the exhaust side. Advertised duration should be kept below 274~
these are my opinions, somone else may recommend somthing entirelly different, im just trying to help.
