K&N filter fitting problem

I have a edelborck carb and an adapter plate and a open element air filter rightnow. it doesnt sit properly on the carb because of the fuel inlet. it was designed for a holley carb. problem can be solved with a little Mr.Gasket 1 inch raise plate I think. Only problem is that Im out of hood clearance the way it is right now.

I want to go to a K&N filter soon but before hand I want the breather to fit properly so the engine breathes well and doesnt take in dirty air in the open space.

Now to the point. What I want to know is If I use the really short K&N filter (I think its 14inches across by like an inch or inch and a half tall) to get the extra room for the lifter. Will that be enough of a filter or will I be limiting my air intake.

Thanks for bearing with me. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
