Food 4 thought - Dual-staged?

I was recently digging through an book on supercharging that I had when I stubbled across a little caption about Dual Staging Turbos and Superchargers. I had seen this on Diesel engines before on Trains and Aircraft but never on an automotive application. Unfortunatly the book only has a little caption about it.

I am just wondering has anyone ever seen this on a gasoline engine? or Would this even been a desirable setup perhaps other than bragging rights?

Notice the turbo blowing into the roots style super charger.

What would be the point? Modern turbo designs can get you up to about 45# boost, and really, what kind of gas engine is going to tolerate that?

Axle/Gears: stock... whatever that means :)
The blower on that 8V-71 is for scavenging only. That is a 2-stroke engine. I used to work on those for a living. There is a valve that bypasses the blower when the turbo starts making boost. The blower is not used to make boost. Without that turbo, that engine is considered normally aspirated.

I know that sounds crazy, but thats how Detroit Diesel designed them.
