intercooler sprayer

this is an idea we dsm guys have been using, you spray c02 on the intercooler to cool the charge temperature.

You can make this system realitivly cheap with

large paintball c02 tank - 40$
remote line with valve - 33$
some spare brake line and some fitting from home depot - 5$

the remote is a line with a valve and you hook it up to a spary bar you bend out of brake line and you drill a bunch of holes in it and turn it on and it freezes the intercooler, you could hook this up to your nitrous systems, or just the spray bar to the purge solenoid, but this is cheap c02 is like 5 $ to refill.

Intake temperatures drop significantly and also stay off knock, there has been 20 hp on "some cars"
NX has the inter- cooler kit they sell but it is 500$

a nitrous purge valve is cheap and works well here if you want to go for the "deluxe" version of this.

Hmm.. the cat's meow would be to add a code routine that based off MAP readings would turn on an output from the ECM to a relay to trigger the system. That way it would be automatic.

try using the EGR control selenoid circuit?

Any unused output would suffice, just have to call up the correct location.

The routine would be simple.

for MAP reading above X setting enable z output.

How to put this to code is something I am a bit behind on. Been a long time since I messed with code. Just need to refresh the ol brain box..

haha-you fellas just made me have another one of them ideas. i have been thinking for a while about how to add a sprayer system for my i-c and was thinking something along the lines of an alcohol and water mix to aid in evap/heat transfer. has anyone gone this route in the past? would it provide enough benefit to be worth doing? then the co2 idea i hear and it sounds cool too. cool. but the triggering method you were speaking of. controlled by the ecm, thats what caused the old bulb to light up, dimly, but lit it was. the answer is in my dfi box. i can set up the nitrous oxide control parameters to control whatever i-c cooling setup i use, even turn on the pump too, if its a liquid based system or control a solenoid for the co2. it prolly doesnt do you guys much good, but it sounds as if its a possibility for me. do you think a water based spray system able to reduce temps enough to bother with.

You guys may want to rethink this. It will work to cool the intercooler, but I’d bet that you’ll end up with cracking problems. Sub zero CO2 hitting aluminum that could be as high as 300* + on the inlet side, and not cooling it evenly is just a recipe for things breaking. If you’re going to do it I’d probably experiment with using some sort of fan nozzle mounted in the air stream significantly ahead of the cooler and only using it at speed
