Have you ever picked one up empty... they're probably over 1/2" thick.
Oh, and just about all of them are made by the same company and then just painted and have a valve added by the N2O co that you buy them from, so they should all polish up about the same

actually they are less than or around a .250" thickness depending on what part of the bottle. If you look at the parts of that dumb guys exploded bottle from his r i c e r that has posted on over and over again. I have seen a "cutaway" display from NOS and NX to see for myself. the bottle shown was one we sold unpainted but it is the same brand used by all the nitrous manufacturers. we we used to sell the unfinished 10#'s for $159 and the 15#'s for $179. It cost about that much nearly to put them together. as for a powdercoated bottle (most manufacturers dont simply paint them) the paint/powdercoating would just be removed first with a fine media blast. the fine media part is important because simple sand blasting could result in retempering the surface of the bottle with its miniature hammerlike properties of sandblasting the soft aluminum. contact that guy in that post with the picture and he can take care of you CHEAP!

Are you sure about the powerdercoating? I've seen a couple of different manufacturor's bottles just flake off like cheap paint (including the NX 15# in my garge) does when you paint aluminum with no primer. The second reason that I doubt that they're powdercoated is that the 400* that they use to cure powdercoat is also the same temp that most aluminum aneals at (becomes super soft, think about this the next time someone powdercoats aluminum wheels... it's the reason why high end wheel manufacturors will not sell powdercoated wheels and void warrenty's for it). Also the reason why using a propane torch to heat a bottle is really stupid.
Any kind of media blasting would work harden the outer shell of the bottle which would make it prone to cracking with an impact. I'd just use some aircraft stripper, it will rip most finishes off quickly.
I'd imagine that they'd have a fairly decent finish underneith that, most of the work in getting it polished would be cleaning up any dings and the formed area on the top aroudn the valve... I bet you could do one in a few hours...

I'm postive that UPS will not just take an N2O bottle if they know that it's there, even if you assure them that it is empty. I've tried to ship car parts before and they've always wanted me to fill out another form specifying what 'car parts' meant, and even made me open a box with a carb in it to prove that it hasn't had fuel run through it (basically smell).
Fed Ex seems more willing to go out of their way to hep you shift what in most people's mind is 'wierd' stuff, and I still have a hard time believing that you can just walk in and ship a pressure vessle...

just empty it and leave the valve open. then ship it, you'll know its safe and I bet they won't ever find out. not that I'm saying go against rules, but if the valve is open and its empty there is not chance of harm to anybody right?
could you give me some detail as to how you did that....
i was thinking about using some sort of stripper for the paint and then just going over it by hand like normal polishing?
what would i need to do?
also....what brackets are you using? those look nice!

UPS never hassled us about whether they were empty or not they just wanted us to say it wasnt and that we knew it was not allowed. all of them maynot be powdercoated I think NOS does but it will come off too.

Nice polished parts, but it raises one question. What do you think the chances are that if your car does catch fire you'll be standing outside it with the trunk open? You might want to reconsider that mounting location for the extinguisher...
