How to decide what oil to use??

Hey guys,

I am planning on building a engine. I am just wondering what the real differences between the oils and how synthetic and regular oil are different.

Thanks

If you're building a new engine, new seals, and everything. I would go with synthetic. Basically to explain it, less friction, less wear, better gas mileage and all of the above a better oil. The only reason i'd stay away from synthetic is because of high miles. But besides that, you cannot go wrong with synthetic. Change every 3000k miles even though synthetic will last longer then regular.

Also, as far as brands, i'd really suggest using mobil 1. Its not quite as expensive as some other synthetics ( not the cheapest either ) but it's a trusted oil. One last thing, to save on money, buy in bulk, around here it's 5$/qrt or if you buy six of them it knocks down to 3.50$/qrt. Im sure you can buy a ton and get a little bit better price hope this helps, I'm sure others will chime in and agree with me.

thanks

I can buy a 55 gallon drum of that oil at my work for about 90 cents a quart.

What about the weight and stuff though?

I think racing oil is pretty much 20w50 but what about be ok for mild racing and street?

thanks

i would go atleast 3000 on regular oil(non synthetic) for proper break in and letting the rings seat. as far as what i have always been told, and done, synthetic is actually too slick for the rings to properly seat in.

Cobra really never had any problems with that, i'd just run it with synthetic on start up, change the oil after a 100 mile break in period. But you could run regular for the first 100 miles, then switch over to synthetic. Mixing oils (regular/synthetic) use to be looked down upon, but now days they make always mixing these compounds. Anyways, i'd run mobil 1 10w-30 for street use changing every 2500-3000 miles depending on how much you drive it. Ie if you drive it a lot, change it less often to save you money. But if you drive it every other weekend, if you change the oil a little early, you'll still only be changing it maybe twice or so the entire summer.

Have fun, later.

Oil

Trux...Im not a master mechanic but pretty sure you should break in a brand new engine on a petroluem based oil so the rings will set properly for one. After break in..then swith over to a good synthetic oil..Whatever synthetic oil you choose you cant go wrong. I run royal purple syn oil 10w-30 roughly for about 5 bucks a qt. I change the oil every 10,000 miles and the filter every 5,000 miles. ac-delco filter here. That is just one of the benefits of running a good quality syn oil "extended drain intervals". If you look at your owners manual in your car it states that even if you run a good petroluem oil.."with good conditions" you can run it up to 7500 miles. So the idea that you need to change your oil every 3000 miles on a car that is used for "normal" use..which is probably 75% of us in here is old and outdated. if you are changing your oil every 3000 miles you are pouring money down the drain. build that motor..break it in on a good petroluem oil..then switch over to a good syn..mobil 1 royal purple, amsoi..etc etc...cant go wrong its a no-brainer...later bro

That is pretty much what I have heard. Reg. oil to break it in with, then switch to Syn. oil.

Why is a synth oil supposed to be good for old style SB's etc I thought mineral oil was the best for us?
I thought synth was only good for Jap engines that have fine tolerances?
Can someone fill me in on this?
