My stock L98 capable of being blown?
Hey fellas, well here is my question. I have a 89 IROC. the motor has about 45k on it and tranny less than 6 months old with around 5k miles on it. I do not know what w as done during the rebuild. But I am guessing it was nothing fancy. The original owner ran the car with a closed stat and it overheated. Car runs great right now and netted me a 14.3 bone stock on street tires and 2.77's.
Anyway, my goal is to achieve a nice 1:1 ratio for my ride. I do not want anything crazy, she is my daily driver and I just want some more solid power and thats it. I am thinking something with maybe 4-5psi boost would be ok? I do not drive the car hard at all, occasionally punching it in traffic. I have heard scary things about stock motors and blowers not liking to stay there
Any input guys. The motor is real strong and a solid foundation I think. I still have to add some headers, finish the intake system to get it flowing a little better and what not before I do this, but I just want some input.
Also I was thinking of going with the scoggin dickey baseplate and some vortec heads for my setup. Sound good? Tell me what you all think
Thanks guys
Will

I've never heard this terminology. What exactly do you mean?
I do not want anything crazy, she is my daily driver and I just want some more solid power and thats it.
Then I would consider bolt-ons and maybe a cam & head change.
I am thinking something with maybe 4-5psi boost would be ok?
If you absolutely want to go with a supercharger, this would be okay. Your stock bottom end is capable of sustaining ~450-500hp (although you'll be close to the margin of safety). The weak link would be the cast pistons.
Also I was thinking of going with the scoggin dickey baseplate and some vortec heads for my setup.
With your bolt-ons, you will get a solid gain (as mentioned above). As for the heads, I cannot comment as I have no experience with these.
BTW, nice exterior color combo! See what I mean?

I have a stock L98 (for now) with a blower and it runs great. Blower went on at 75K miles and its been running great for over 45k miles (117k total now). I live on an island, so this is not highway miles. 4-5 psi is no problem. Just remember to take good care of the engine.

if you're going for a blower, dont go nuts with the cam, if you have loads of overlap, you'll just end up blowing yer air / fuel right out of the exhaust.
Aparrently (though i'm not sure) stock smog cams are quite good for blowers as they have very little overlap.
