Adding some N20 ?'s
Adding some N20 ?'s
I have a 1985 trans am tpi with 54000 miles. Its a stock 305 tpi. I have a hypertech chip, 160 thermo, tb bypass, functional ram air. I have a stock transmission, a chrysler rear end with 4.10 gears and a new center section. I would like to add a nos kit. Will i break any thing using the 100 shot, i always run 93 octane. I think i might have to do something with the engine timing so i dont get detonation. But will the trans hold up .

It is always a bit of a crap shoot bud. I am not sure what the tune is with the hypertech chip but as mentioned before most of these chips advance timing. The general rule of thumb is to retard timing 2 degrees for every 50hp. You didn't say what tranny you have but looking at your pics it looks like a 700r4. My 700r4 did not like me after a while with a 150 shot (~500 lb/ft). I rebuilt it twice then swapped in a TKO. Other things to consider is your ignition system... an aftermarket spark control unit is suggested but at a minimum make sure that your coil and wires are in good working order. Also, spark plugs 1 - 2 heat ranges cooler will aid preventing detonation.
Your engine 'should' be just fine with a 100 shot. As for the tranny - big ?. Some do fine, others do not. N2O produces a lot of torque. On top of a TPI that = big fun but the cars were engineered for a certain power level.
If you go for it, remember not to hit the nitrous at less than 2500-3000 rpm. There are any number of safety devices that would be helpful but I acquired them as i went: fuel pressure safety switch, rpm window switch, etc. If you think that you are going to stick with the nitrous and have it grow with you, I would suggest a Jacobs mastermind. It has a lot of features and is much cheaper than buying the individual components.
Don't be afraid of it - just go in with your eyes open. The old addage that 'you have to pay to play' is not negotiable
.
Good luck,
