How much nitrous

Just curious what you guys would run on this setup. I have to make one more braided -8AN hose and I will be finished. It is:

350HO crate engine-
10:1 compression, ported/polished vortec heads, upgraded springs, XE274 camshaft, super victor intake, Speed Demon 650 carb, MSD Pro Billet Distributor, MSD 6A ignition, MSD blaster 2 coil.

Current best is 12.4 with that setup on radial tires.

Bottom end in the motor is:
Cast aluminum pistons (weak link)
Forged PM Steel Connecting rods
Nodular Iron crankshaft

The nitrous setup I am running is:
NOS cheater kit

Stand alone fuel system consisting of:
Jazz 1 gallon fuel cell
Holley Blue Fuel Pump and regulator with return

Safety Stuff:
Fuel pressure safety switch, competition engineering WOT switch, and a button.

The motor has under 5k miles on it. What do you guys think I should pill it for once I get the combo dialed in. I will be spraying race gas with the nitrous mix when I do spray.

Start conservative. Work up from there once you KNOW what's going on inside the engine and get the on-nitrous tuning worked out.

Conservative in this case would be a 100 shot with 4* of spark retard when the nitrous goes active. Yeah, I know, boring. It's just the consequences of having the tinyest bit of detonation with those stock pistons would quickly spell disaster.

I've sprayed 150HP worth of nitrous against an engine with cast pistons, 10:1 compression and NO spark retard on pump gas, but it was OBVIOUS that I was pushing things. In short, don't try this at home unless you can live with the consequences.

Is the 12.4 on motor? I would say you could hit it with a 150 shot as long as your tune is good. Go easy on the timing and run a little rich you'll be suprised how much nitrous the motor will gobble down.

Also, what pump are you running for the primary fuel system? stock lines?

Yeah 12.4 on radials, 2.0 60 foot. I imagine it would have done 12.1X's or 12.2's on a good drag radial or slick.

The lines are stock, but it has a holley 110 gph mechanical strip pump for the primary pump.

What else was done to this motor and what did it run off and on the juice?

I have always heard that running nitrous with a mechanical fuel pump is a bad idea.

Also with 10:1 compression and cast pistons I'd say 100 would be the tops. Just to be safe anyways. I bet a 100 shot would get you a 12 flat or maybe even a 11.9.

You know you'd kill to run an 11.

lol, hes running a electric, stand alone fuel system for the nitrous. not mechanical.

oh, and he already ran a mid/low 11 with it... and had to let off. not even a full nitrous pass.

what I would do if it was MY motor would be to get a jacobs nitrous mastermind. they're neat as ****. you can dial back the nitrous, and have it come on in relation to RPM.. meaning you can safely run a 150max shot, and have it feather in.... keeping you well in the save cyl pressure zone for your cast pistions, out of detonation, and still get the max power out of it.
plus if you hit the rev limiter, it pulls the nitrous off before it cuts the spark out (kinda important...) and it pulls the timing with the nitrous on... neat lil thing.

ive been seriously considering running a NX kit and a mastermind on this motor for the time being...

Hey Travis! Did you see how old this post is lol? I like the nitrous mastermind, I heard there is a company out that actually designs solenoids for pulsing use with progressive controllers which would be good piece of mind .

nope, didnt notice.

i was wondering why you made it since you already sprayed. lol.

i havent heard of any 'noids made for pulsing, but using a progressive controller really doesnt hurt them anyway... im sure it shortens their live some, but it doesnt hurt them... NX ones have a warrenty anyway.
