Turbocharging '83 LG4?
Whats up folks,
I have a '83 LG4 in my Firebird. The engine itself is bone stock and has 106k on it. I do have a complete Accell ignition installed, and custom straight piped exhaust. Anyway, I have been looking at a few small block turbocharger kits for carbed engines, and was wondering if my stock LG4 would be able to take the boost ok.
Anyways, if anyone knows if it would be worth while to turbo my car and get a little extra power, or weather i will blow my engine to peices, all imput is appriciated.
Thanks!

why not just supercharge it? it'll probably end up costing you less. what kind of condition is the engine in? burning oil? spark knock? anything unusual? I'm not offering advice; it's just my opinion. i think you might be able to get away with maybe 6lbs of boost. hopefully, someone who has forced induction experience (b/c i don't) will prove me right or wrong. if you're that concerned, which is legitimate, just run a low to mild boost setting.
yeah, thats the great thing about turbo setups. just start out with low boost and if you want to run more its as simple as installing a manual boost controller ( a ball/valve type can be homemade for under $20) rather than haveing to order a new pulley with a supercharger. Turbos are also easily upgraded say with an intercooler or by swapping to a larger compressor or turbine housing.
i would personally search for a blow through turbo setup as they are easier to upgrade. most carb turbo setups youll find on ebay tend to be the draw through kind so look for the blow through. I think youll be happier in the long run.

The LG4's low compression + a carb… perfect engine to run boost. You'll get away with a lot more then you would with an L68, LU5, or TPI car. The only thing that you really have to worry about is fueling… Since I haven't heard of anyone being very successful with a Q-jet and boost I'd probably suggest (and this is a rare suggestion for me… usually I suggest going the other way) ditching the ECM, getting an older, mechanical advance distributor and a holley carb…

Sweet!
Yeah, my engine is still running AWSOME.
Still pulls good for sure. No burning oil, no knock or anything.
I am definately going to look into a turbocharger system.
If anyone knows where I can find a semi-economical turbo
kit other than eBay, please be sure to let me know!
