air/water intercooler

I am going to be putting a twin turbo setup in my 88 Iroc. I am looking to build a air/water intercooler and I am not sure on a few things. I am not looking for a water injection system as it is a street car.

I am looking for something like this http://www.jacksonracing.com/Shop/Vi...eIndexID=38790

I am not concerned with the radiator or pump. What I dont understand is the cooling core design. What is the inside of that core like? I am guessing that is copper tubing either in their open on the inside or if the copper tubing would be wrapped around the 3" pipe...

What I would like to do is come of each turbo and connect right in to the cooling core and then to the TB with a T style connector

Maybe this diagram of what I want to do will explain it better:

CORE CORE

[ _______ ________ ]

Turbo TB Turbo2

Any information on this type of setup would be greatly appreciated.

i was just curious how effective it would be to get a regular air/air IC, and some aluminum sheets, and basically box off the air air, and then run (ice) water through that... to make air/water IC... what problems do you guys see with this, and would it be effective enough?

It will work, but not as well as a core designed for air/water application.

There is actually a thread on another board I was involved in recently discussing the same thing.

well whats the drawbacks? is it because the smaller air/air IC's dont flow enough CFM's? will it work any better then if you just used air... like it was designed to be used?

maybe i should just check out that other thread, which board was that on?

The book "Maximum Boost" talks of doing this. His idea was to use the intercooler backwards. The intake charge would go through where the ambient air would normally travel and water would travel the path the intake charge normally would. This would allow a large flow rate through a small intercooler and would still do a good job of cooling the charge due to the waters ability to absorb more heat than air would given the same surface area that the heat is transmitted through. This would definatly be a space saver, but it would require a lot of fab work and wouldn't be as reliable as an air to air unit (ie leaks and pump failures). Not to mention, you'd still need to find a place for the heat exchanger(s).
