supercharge 305 TPI

Just a quick question. If I were to purchase a used bolt on supercharger for the 305 TPI engine. Would I be ready to run ?

If they claim it is a bolt on then, nothing has to be changed right? Ofcourse it depends on the boost. Lets assume we use the default bost.

Also, will that ruin my transmission ? I guess it hurts most if i accelerate hard from a still position.

Thanks

used blower for 305

There's a lot of info to cover here, so here is where I'd start: Whatever you do, get every single part that came with the original supercharger kit from the original owner. I have a Vortech on my 305 (I've had it ten years, and I didn't do the original installation: big mistake) And, if you have any other modifications to your vehicle, particularly intake and exhaust pieces, tuning is pretty much always part of the deal. Remember, the blower just moves the air in faster and in larger quantities. You still need to add fuel in a proportion to the additional air (for AFR of about 11.5 to maybe 12.0 to 1, but don't quote me) that will allow you to run reliably in boost (read that as "no detonation"). There are a couple of ways to do this, the easiest being an FMU. I'm a little pressed for time, but long story short: some tuning is pretty much inevitable. The good news is that it has been done before many times, and you can do it or have it done, too. I hope that helps at least a little bit. Also, in regards to your other questions about default boost and transmission reliability: (1) Try to stay close to the original boost level set by the manufacturer, at least at first. (2) At a bare minimum, get a transmission cooler. Seriously consider a good overhaul/beef-up for an original 700-R4, or a stronger manual if you've got a stick. It's a lot to absorb at one time, but if you plan on really enjoying your car, you really need to consider adding some "strength" to other components. You can always do it incrementally.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for the information, will come in handy later. I decided not to go with supercharging yet. Instead I will do headers and such first. My exhaust, by the sight of it, has probably been original since it was manufactured

supercharging

Definitely a wise choice. Start with the relatively small, and work your way into the "big" stuff (like blowers). Two things to consider: (1) When you choose headers, seriously consider having them ceramic coated, preferably inside and out. It adds to the cost, but they last much longer, retain heat inside much better, and look fantastic. (2) Understand that everything you do to the exhaust and induction systems to free up airflow will change the boost characteristics of the "stock" blower settings no matter what supercharger you buy. It usually means changing a pulley or something like that. It was something I ran into because I did the same thing you're doing. I just figured you ought to know, as these little things will add to your costs and can really "nickel and dime" you to death if you're not aware of them up front. Good luck.
