a "Would this turbo work" thread

Alright well I was wanting to do a turbo vette or third gen project this summer but the funds aren't coming together, I would have to sell the rx-7 . So I figured I would try and use a car I already have, which is a '92 Firebird (3.1L). Now I know this turbo is by far not the best one to use but I am just wondering if it would work. It is a T04B (I think it's a B) .60 a/r compressor side, and the exhaust side has a a/r of 1.32 !!! Now I figure that the compressor side is about the right size, and am aware that the exhaust side is freakin huge. The main thing I need answered is if the V6 will even spool the turbo the exhaust side has a split inlet which I know will help but I dunno if it will be enough. I'm not look for much, probably just 7-8#s or 10 at the most. Thanks.

I know I could get a better suited turbo fairly cheap, but again, I have this one just lying around so I figured I would ask. Thanks.

Jeff

no, if you want to see the "large" side of what you could get away with on the exhaust A/R, then look to the turbos used on the 3.8 turbo buicks.

speaking of RX-7's though I did happen to see a stock turbo and a few aftermarket turbos for them and was surprised by the large exh A/R's found on them. I guess it is because of the huge RPM they run.

Ok, thats kinda what I was thinking.

And yea, some third gen 1.3L rx7s are running single turbos with >1 exhaust a/r.

I figured you were talking about seconds gens, but mines a third and I don't have much experience with the TIIs, and as Synapsis said, same displacement.

I'd take a look at this thread regarding those headers.

Rx7's dont pull loads of air because of the rpms they run at, but because they fire 3 times per revolution per rotor (they have two or 3 in the case of a 20b or the rx8) vs our v6/8's firing each cylinder once every four rotations.
