emmsions ...AND turbo

Well I am probably gongi to get flammed for this but ....... here we go

I bought the single 650 hp turbo kit ( T-62) from BBS . Well my problem is .... I need to have all the stock smogg equiptment in place here. I have no doubt I can make it pass a sniffer but I need all the crap under the hood still . The problem with this kit is .... the wastgate location on the manifold ( passenger side ) doenst allow me to run the smog pump there. Only thing I can think of is ..... a different manifold , which I didnt want to do because the peace from BBS is so dam nice !

Anyone ? As I am just getting into this ...my creative thinking on this topic is limited as I am not up on the can/can;t do's of turbo kits ,etc

Thanx

you should weld an O2 bung on and adapt your smog line to run into that

well I have been buggin Edguardo as far as possible options . Nice guy BTW !

I am going to cut the wastegate tube off of it . Then have it tig welded to the dirver side header down at the collector part of it . Then it's just a matter of running the A.I.R lines to the primary's on the headers and voila ! I know most people who run turbo's don't have all the emmissions stuff on but , they are getting sick up here with road side inspections and stuff. So the goal of this car will HAVE to be 100 % legal I just wish there where easier ways to try and be compliant .

not sure of smog laws in canada, but in california even if you put all the stock equipment on youll still be illegal, unless the turbo kit has a exectutvie order number

On my car, which has the bbs header, I moved the wastegate to the crossover pipe. I cut off the original wastegate tube and welded it shut. But i did it because i wanted to run the wastegate into the exhaust and it was easier to do so with the wastegate on the crossover. I didnt like the sound the wastegate made before. It sounded like a bad exhaust leak. Now its all good.

i don't mean to be a PITA but i don't know if thats such a good wastegate design just for the fact that you are letting more pressure out on one side of the engine so the exhaust may effective start going backwards towards the wastegate from the turbo side when its open. If i was you i would put the gate in the bbs location but with a smoother transition then run a dump tube from it to the downpipe which wouldn't be so difficult.

I never thought about that, but its already done. And i dropped 4 tenths in the 1/4 mile. As soon as i did it, I went for a drive and it felt faster right away.

Edqaurdo told me to move it to where the pipes converge on the drivers side header ...for good results. So thats the route I will go with that . Then get the AIR bings put in and away I go

thanx again all

I too, will be retaining all my smog equipment. In my case though, I'm using the Gale Banks twin turbo setup so it's completely different. I've got all the emissions stuff figured out but I do have a question. By law, I wonder if an air line is required to all eight cylinders or can we plumb one line per side similar to the 4th gens??? The heck with it, I'm plumbing one line per side......

Welll nice to know I am not the only one

only one line per side would make thing so much neater ! I am gongi to have to ask what they say up here about it all . I will just keep dumping stuff I have done or heard on the topic to this thread

Good luck there Willie

Hey, I'm also interested in hearing about this as well. The emissions problem was the only thing that was keeping me from buying one of Edgardo's excellent kits. I never thought about relocating the wastegate. Just a question... aren't there large turbos out there equipped with integral wastegates like the T3s used on the twin turbo kit that BBS Designs also offers? Why not just cut off the wastegate pipe completely and run one of those to keep the smog pump?

I'm also concerned about emissions since I live in NYC.

I sent him an email asking that very thing . Sure the integral wastegate may not be optimal but if I can make an easy emmisions setup that would be nice . It'll still have enough to toss me back

Actually, I did some more research on it. According to the book "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell, the reason why only T3 turbos have integral wastegates is because above 300 HP, the external wastegates become mandatory. Oh well, looks like I may just go TurboedTPI's route. He seems to have had good success with it.

How about the smog pump AIR valve? You know that black box at the front side of the passenger side of the motor? Did you figure out where to relocate that? It's connected by a hard line to the AIR pump.

The hard line is only used with factory serpentine setups. On the v-belt design (1987 and older), a rubber hose was used. So with a hose, the diverter valve can be placed virtually anywhere!

Well I found out the integral wastegate just won't work. Internally wastegated turbine housings only come in TO3 style flanges and the very small ones . ... so that is out .

Thats another thing I havent addressed yet . But I am happy after reading Willie's post . But I am wondering this "steel line " can it be swapped for the flexable rubber one on a serpantne setup ?

The whole idea if I am keeping the serp setup or going back in time to retain the A/C is a whole different issue . descisions descisions

I'm sure it can but can't say for sure because I've never tried it. BUT maybe this pic will help. I just happen to have my pump off my '87 (v-belt) Z28 convertible and it currently sits on top of my twin-turbo mock-up. You can see there's a fitting bolted to it and the 3/4-inch hose attached to it.

Thanks a lot Willie. I can imagine that a rubber hose can easily be swapped in for the steel line. It is just air going through it afterall, right? Now, we'd just need to get the part number for that fitting to put a rubber line on, or just cut up the existing line to use as a fitting for the new rubber line.

AWESOME!!! Looks like I'll have one of the first BBS turbo kit powered L98s in Brooklyn!
