NITROUS good or bad idea??? please help!

ok.. i have an 88 iroc with an L98. i know how dangerous nitrous can be for alot of cars, but how well does this motor handle a 100-150 shot? is it a bad idea for 140,000 mile motor? i mean my car runs as good as new but i want it to stay that way. any opinions will help.

if you have any problems nitrous will only make them worse. if there are problems you dont know about nitrous will bring them to you attention, sometimes in a big way. if the motor is in great running shape and nitrous is set up and used correctly you wont have any problems. i personally have a kit that was designed for a 110 shot on a bone stock 305 or a 150 shot on a bone stock 350.

if you set it up right and use it responsibly a 350 should be able to handle a 150 shot.

i'm in the same situation as you, she wants nitrous on her car, 88 formula 350

i think we might go with the 100 shot kit.

what i'd plan on doing is using a on/off switch
on at 3200 off at 5200 and a timing retard since i run alot of timing in her car now

you can also look at controlers to bring the shot on earlier and smoother, then they'll open at Xseconds

but when you start adding up all that stuff and bottle refills
it gets to be alot of $$, about the same as rebuilding a motor

but, it's a heck of alot easier to install too.

So long as you're in decent mechanical condition and have a decent tune your motor will be fine even at those power levels... I've tried some pretty silly things while spraying nitrous. I've kept the timing up, left hot plugs in, lowered the fuel pressure and upped the bottle pressure, sprayed off idle, everything imaginable that you wouldnt wanna do on nitrous and its never done anything bad. This leads me to believe that nitrous isnt nearly as temperamental as a lot of folks lead you to believe. As long as everythings just about right you'll be fine.

I know a guy who was spraying a 200 shot into a stock 350 shortblock every weekend for like 5 years before it broke... mid/low 10's for 5 years and the crank snapped. Cant ask for much more than that.

lol....around here we find high mileage motors that are all loose for $200 out of a junkyard and spray 150-200 through them until they blow up. typically lasts me a whole summer before the motor frags, and i'm only out new bearings and a garage rehone job using some stones and a cordless drill along with a gasket kit. makes for fun times showing people they got beat with a 100k+ miles junkyard motor.

I'm in the junkyard clan as well, 140,000 mile L98 with a 175 shot ran one jet leaner than it calls for. We had a local kid in a 2002 Trans Am run a nitrous kit with NO JETS on the fuel or nitrous side and it took it, he ran it like that for months before he banged it off the rev limiter and grenaded his intake. I use stock heat range spark plugs for this setup and have ran it down the track for 2 runs with no timing retard, it ran great save for the wheel spin causing it to run out of traction at the 8th . The older looser motors will do fine on nitro as long as you keep the ignition and fuel delivery in good shape.
