Using a junkyard turbo on my 350buildup ...what should I get it off of?

The turbo unit that is. I was looking in a yard today...the best one was off of a Mercedes diesel I think. Saw some from a variety of 4 bangers...a Datsun 280.

What should I look for? I'm only planning on running 6-8 pounds of boost..maybe 10 if I can also snag an intercooler. Can I use a 4 or 6 banger turbo?

Turbos, can't help you there. I'd consider twin turbo using two units from T-Bird Tubocoupes.

As for the intercooler, get one from a 87-88 Conquest/Starion, they've got pretty big intercoolers. read for yourself http://users.ticnet.com/randynet/icpage.htm and http://www.vfaq.com/mods/Starquest.html

LOL, funny, I'm about to undertake the same project. Plans as they stand now are to use the Garret/Air Research TO3 units from a mid 80's 2.2L dodge. From what I've been reading, a single T03 will support about 300 hp.

Well I'l be well over 300 without the turbo...400 is my goal NA. Only doing single turbo too.. a least for now. Altho...maybe I should consider twin...

Twins using turbos off of the manual transmission TurboCoupes will work just fine to about 600ish horse. As an aside, you don't need an intercooler until you hit 10-12psi of boost. When you do get to the point of needing one, go to the Ford dealer and get one for their trucks. They're huge and cost about $300 - new. Little bit of fabbing and voila! you're in there!

A general rule of thumb when using OE turbo's on a non OE application (as in junk yard turbos on a 350) is to use a turbo or combination of turbos that equal the same engine displacement as the original application....

For example.. a 350 engine displaces 5.7 liters. There aren't very many factory turbocharged gasoline burning engines of this size out there.. So your only choice is to run TWO turbo's. To determine the best source engine for this, divide 5.7 in half and you get 2.85 liters.. So you should be looking for two identical factory turbocharged cars with a displacement in the area of 2.85 liters.

Look for early 80's model Volvo 700 series, some of which had a 2.9 liter turbo six I believe. Also, I believe the dodge/mistu cars from the 80's had a 2.6 liter turbo engine (the Conquest/Starion among others).

In reality, selecting proper turbo sizing is a science and art combined.. but I've ran across numerous sites about junk yard turbos and you can get lucky.. some of these people are running 10's on a really tight budget!

Thanks for the input guys, it'll be invaluable when I go to the yard on saturday

how do diesel turbos compare to gas ones? does the equal-the-original-displament rule still apply....or would a single 6 cyl diesel turbo suffice?

Hey Jester, don't know if you know about it or not but if you go here: http://www.egroups.com/group/jyturbo there is a bunch of information on this kind of thing. Took me over a week to read all of the messages and start working on a plan.

Enjoy,

Steve

I have been avoiding this post, however... I sell turbochargers for a living. All I can stress is that YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. If you pick up a "junkyard" turbo, 90% of the time your engine will end up there too. Turbo sizing, trim options, housing options, etc. are critical when choosing a turbo. Oiling is of the utmost importance, why would you pick up a cheap junk turbo with dry-rotted seals and poor lubrication? Use your heads, people. Can't afford a new one? Save your damned money and stop buying Playstation games! TRUST ME, you are much better off buying a proper unit from a professional. I will show you a proper turbosystem installed on my car next spring... Just a helpful hint or two!
