Newbie questions... pretty basic for you guru's!

ok, Ive been tossing around the idea of getting a Weiand Pro-Street 142 CI.

1. Will a 4" cowl hood work? or should I find a camaro hood and do some cutting?

2. Whats highest compression you guys would go with?

3. This car will end up being my weekend driver or maybe daily, pretty much if I keep my foot out of it, I shouldnt notice to much a drop in Mileage right?

if i remember right, the 142 blowers are supposed to fit under most factory hoods, i dunno if it'd fit under a camaro hood, but im almost certain a 2" jobbie would do it. also, remember boost does not change compression(how far the piston travels).. but im sure you'd want to get dished pistons before you went about doing this. from my reading(cant say experience... yet ), i think 9.0 is as high as you'd want to go before adding the blower. as for gas mileage, read the post next to yours labeled 'how bad will this affect gas mileage'

You'll need a pretty tall hood to run the 142 on a third gen. On my camaro, I had a 3.5" cowl and the air cleaner rubbed at the very front edge. I would definately run a glass cowl instead of cutting a stock hood. Depending on your cam profile, piston type and gas preferences, I'll agree with the recommendation of 9:1 as a max. My experience with the 142 is they're great for 305s and 350s with some compression. I also tried running it on a low compression 383 and it was more of a nuiscance than a blower! I got the following results:

350, 9.5:1, 232/242 .540/.530 on a 110 seperation and AFR195's resulted in about 5 pounds of boost and awesome performance.

383, 8.25:1, 244/254 .540/.550 on a 114 sep, AFR210's only managed 2 pounds of boost and lack luster performance.

On my 350, I ran too much timing and broke a ring land on my hypereutectics.. Keep in mind I was running a 110 sep cam, which means it wasn't building max possible boost. I would stick to a max 9:1, forged pistons and conservative timing (especially if using a blower grind cam) if using a 142/144 type blower.

Alright. Yeah, my little 305 runs pretty damn good and was built well by the previous owner, I only have 36,000 miles on the motor. Ive got forged TRWs, and a forged crank, the motor is balanced and blueprinted. and Im sure the rest of my drivetrain can handle it... basically what im going for with this project is, to see how much I can get out of a 305, because, well, its "just" a 305 I get enough crap from people that I have a 305, but then they change their tune after a ride Whatcha guys think?

Well there's this this guy named Preston Smith that has an 85 IROC-Z with "just a 305" using the stock manifold base(extrude honed though), stock ported runners & plenum. Hes using a vortech + a home made liquid to air intercooler. He has a full bodied car + stereo (big speaker box in back) so his car isn't excactly light either. Last I knew of he was running 9.9s in the ¼ mile. He might be quicker now.

  • SLP cat-back
  • Paxton supercharger
  • Nitrous Express nitrous oxide

DAMN! thats quick for "just" a 305 I have one other question, my cam is a "Magnum Cam" 270H Series - 270 Advertised, 224 @.050" - Lift- Int/Exh. - .470... the previous owner was the one who installed it, and the motor only has 36,000 on it, so would this cam work well? If not, who makes a good "blower cam"?
