Vortech or ATI for pre '88's

Do you think there is anyway possible to get these guys to make a kit for us w/ TPI's from 85-87? I don't want to do the swap to serpentine for a large # of reasons. How so you think we could convince them to make the kit. They already have half the kit made. They just have set it up a little differently.

Not a possibility. It all has to do with supply and demand. Neither ATI nor Vortech was willing to make a kit five years ago and as our cars get older, the chance of them doing so decreases. The demand just isn't there.

They already have half the kit made. They just have set it up a little differently.
Well not really. The entire kit has to be redesigned because the compressor would be located on the opposite (passenger) side. In fact, the compressor itself must be a "mirrored" image of the one in production today. So it's not only a ducting redesign, but also a bracket/pulley AND compressor redesign.

It's none of my business, but why not? I never realized how much more efficient the serpentine system is until I converted one of my cars. Now, I see how much the v-belt design is outdated and definitely "primitive". Other than the cost to convert, I see absolutely no advantage that a v-belt system has over serpentine. Please fill me in.

Definitely have to get custom brackets made if you don't wish to convert to serpentine. That's what Preston Smith did on his 85 IROC when it had a Vortech. Perhaps if you can find a way to get a hold of him, maybe he can tell you how?

I noticed on your web page you don't have the AC anymore. I suppose that would make it easier to put one on. But I agree that it would be easier to convert to a serpentine setup.

Ive heard a lot about this Preston smith guy. Does anybody know how to get a hold of him?
The reasom I don't like serpentine, is as follows: a) I like to be able to disconnect the smog pump at the track. b) I like to be able to discon. p/s at the track c) I like the polished aluminum march pulleys that I already have. d) I don't want to buy another NEW Edelbrock water pump E)I don't know how to convert it to serpentine w/out a/c. So you can see my point right? later -justin

Justin,
Your reasoning has me alittle confused, You say you don't want to change to a serpentine system, because you won't be able to remove the p/s and smog pump belts, and the gains you are getting by doing this are probably very, very small, but yet you have aleast a hundred pounds of stereo equipment that you haul down the track..hmmmm

As for the a/c....GM makes a a/c delete bracket...then you'll just have to use a shorter belt,

Now on the march pulley's, you will not be able to use them period!!! on a ATI or vortech kit...the aluminum pulley is to thick and will throw off the spacing for the blower/crankshaft pulley...believe me I know this first hand...I have a nice set of march power and amp pulley's that i use for paper weights now....

so i closing the only true bitch that you have is you have to buy a new waterpump...

think of the heads you'll turn when you pull up and everyone hears that blower whistling away under that cowl hood...

later,

You make some great points. As far as the stereo, I actually do take most of it out before I race, and any part that I leave in adds weight to the rear. But, either way, like I said, you're right! That was exactly what I needed to hear. Thanks a lot for the advice! I think I have made up my mind.--Justin

Oh yeah, one more thing. Can anybody tell me exactly what I'm looking for in a donor car for the serpentine setup?? What year and motor is best. Can you still get the 1le ac delete bracket? Whatis everything I need to take off the donor car? Thanks a lot for all your help. -Justin

Justin, I just converted my '87 to serpentine. Check out the "Changing V-belt System to a Serpentine System" post on this very board. I give specifics on what you'll need to convert.

What year and motor is best?
Any '88 - '92 305 or 350. If you find a TPI, you won't need additional parts. If you find a TBI, there's one bracket that's different. But the one you'll need is still available thru GM for about $5.

Can you still get the 1LE A/C delete bracket?
As far as I know you can.

Willie

He had the headers made at a shop near Medford Mass. I dont remember the name of the place but its a guy named ***** that runs it.

Pretty expensive though.
There is a lot with a turbo to purchase.
-Headers
-turbo
-wastegate
-intercooler
-tubing

If you can get it all on there it would be sweet, and better gains. Good luck.
