Radiator for blown car ?'s

I am looking for a radiator for my car.I used the stock one when I just had the blower, the car ran super cool, but that was with a stock motor. Now,I have a new motor,It put out 400hp on motor alone before I add the 12-15lbs.I want to go Aluminum, but the price is killing me,$575.I know of companies that offer the brass with thicker cores for around $275.Who here owns what, and what do you recommend?Give me everything you guys know, buisness name & phone # if you could. Its kind of a big purchase, but if I pick the wrong one to start, its only then it will get expensive.P.S Could the stock one hold up?

hey darren what's up. call tony at charged air systems in grayslake, illinois. www.chargedair.com

he makes custom intercoolers, radiators, and headers. i remember him quoting me a price of $400 for a custom unit. call him and give him a call. but that price was included with the intercooling he is doing for my turbo stuff

You might want to try giving griffen radiators a look.I got mine from summit and talked to the tech guy because I was also thinking about the becool radiator but the price was like you said $5?? something. He recomended the griffen to me and it has worked great. I will tell you though there is no such think as exact fit more like custom fit.Hope this helps.

Yes,I will buy some Vasoline before I purchase,it a real *** ripper

So,I know Be Cool makes a great radiator, any before and after results?I had my heart set on a Be cool, but, the price is outragous,IMHOP.Im always open to other avenues when money is involved.
ProchargedRoc,Did you get a radiator from Tony?Im really interested in the fitment, and of course operation.
BHoward,I didnt even know Griffen made a radiator for our year.I will look into it.How does yours fit,and perform?
Anyone have any results or are using the factory radiator with good results?I mean high HP.Or does anyone have a brass radiator? Thanks, just want to cover all avenues.

i dont see you using a brass radiator darren. it just wont dissipate enough heat for your hp. that is why most of the time a 2 core aluminum radiator is better than a 4 core copper.

no i dont have one yet, but andris skultze (sp?) does. i know for sure. email him and ask him. Tony has been making radiators for years and like i said quoted me a decent price, but i dont know if that was because he is doing my headers and intercooling and just wanted to give me a break or what. call him and ask. or email

Hey Procharged89z, the only problem I had with thier unit was that the plastic piece that goes on top of the radiator (for some unknown reason I can't remember the name of that piece) that holds it in place, along with the upper radiator hose wouldn't fit back on because the radiator was to thick. I had to cut mine some to make it fit or you could just get one made; the cost couldn't be more then $20 or $30 bucks. If I remember correctly the radiator was like $300-$350 and it made about a 15- 20 degree drop in temps.

Near perfect fitment is the good thing about the Be Cool™ radiator. It has integral brackets that fit the stock radiator/fan support bracket. It also includes a spacer with it to space the radiator/fan support further away from the core support for clearance.(I didn't need it though.)
If you have an auto trannie you can still use the less expensive manual trannie radiator if you are already using a seperate trannie cooler.

I used the stock radiator for years on my car even with the supercharger & with the AC blasting. However the radiator core was perfectly clean and the entire cooling system was well cared for. Around '89 or '90 the fan control function in my stock PROM stopped working and it wouldn't activate the fan. I got a Hypertech thermo master chip from an '87. It turns the fan on around 185°. I made a flowcooler™ type disk for the water pump impeller. I also used water wetter™, more for it's excellent anticorosive properties than anything else. I used a 180° Robert Shaw™ thermostat. I blocked the water pump bypass in the block & drilled a bypass hole in the thermostat.
I got my new Be Cool™ radiator because the plastic tanks on the stock radiator began cracking. After getting the Be Cool™ The engine actually ran a little cooler than I wanted and now I run a 195° stat.

i'll chime in... i've got a Superior 5 row brass radiator in my 88 GTA. it works great and the car runs very cool. i had 13k miles on it before the engine rebuild last summer, and the old engine (stock TPI intake, stock replacement heads, 440/465 lift cam, etc) made 465 rwhp/521 rwtq on non-intercooled ~14 psi boost (93 octane). i've got the receipt somewhere if anyone is interested. i believe it was around $300. the fit is good--i think a very minor modification had to be made to the upper radiator support but it was simple. the new setup is making significantly more power, but won't have any results until i get my passenger side turbo rebuilt!
