How much nitrous is too much?

l've got a 1990 IROC-Z with a TPI 305 it's basically stock (68,000 miles) l'm currently running 100 horses worth of nitrous through it, it does awesome but l was wondering if l could squeeze out just 50 more with the stock settings, should l retard the timing, run more octane, wait to get an ignition system and adequate fuel system? has anyone else ever done this?
thanks very much

I wouldn't try it unless you have the resources in case you roast it. I helped put a 250 on a stock 350 (against my suggestions) in an older nova, and I drove it. Couple of good runs in the 13's, then the COOLEST motor loss I have ever heard. Let's just say ventilated block... Stay with 100 and work the combo till you can build a NOS motor

Go ahead and run the 150.Myself and a couple of other guys have been running 150 jets for a long time in our 305's.Leave the timming stock at 6 degrees BTDC,you'll be fine.
Ive ran 82 nitrous/65 fuel, which is about 175 hp jets in my completly stock "BOTTOM"
305 with no ill effects.

I'm with nitro don. My first time I ran 175 hp jets. But I didn't care and it was on the stock motor that has no compression right. The only thing I did to make sure it wouldn't blow was run a digital 6 to retard the timing when I hit the button and checked my plugs after every pass. 12.84 on that 86 305 tpi.

You're running too much nitrous if:

- you win the race AND blow up your engine

- hmmm

That's about it.. As for your ride, I concur with the other posts.. I don't think 150 will harm your engine at all, as long as you don't hit it too early. With a shot that "large" on a 305, I'd be above 2500-3000 rpm before laying into the nitrous.

My bigger concern would be your transmission.. If it's a 700r4, especially going from the 1 - 2 shift on the spray. Since your car is a 90, it has a better tranny than my 86 did, so you might get away with it, especially with only 68k miles.

Have fun!

Steve

If you have a good mix & your fuel pressure is haning in there, too much is when you start to lift the heads or hear someone @ the door (knocking). if you run it lean, say good night francis.

personally, if were me & this is the commuter, keep it simple & small (100/125) if this is the toy, letter wail! once you have learned a ton on the N2O & blow it to the sky, it is time for a new motor. start on the small side. do a TON of plug cuts & remember to keep them "almost wet" learn what this stuff will do. it is pretty fantastic stuff.

there is a guy here in SD, that runs a 72 or 73 Firbird that has a low compression (8:1, 9:1) 468 BBC. he has nothing special in the car but 2 fantastic fuel systems & a ton of juice. he is running 3 systems & is in the low 9's. this is the 3rd car that he has dont this formula on (65 chevelle, in the high 8's/low 9's, & Ponty Monty white monte carlo w/BB Pontiac in it (has been in Car Craft). same formula, same results.

personally i think you are running too much nitrous when:

your nitrous system has more horsepower than your motor....

but BUILT NITROUS MOTORS are like that. Have a few friends with big juice and built nitrous motors.

they run mid to low 12s on motor and mid to low 9s on spray...

i find it so incredible what can come out of a bottle. the cars that run 12's on the motor & 9's on the bottle blow me away.
