Spark plug indexing? Does it really give you that much power?
Hi Guys,
I was on a site today that was talking about spark plug indexing and that you will gain immediate power. I have the 305 TBI "e" code. I was wondering:
How many have done it to our Fbody's
How do you do it? Any recommendations?
Does it really give you that much extra power?
I am changing my plugs today and really want to see what people think, on this. I am putting in some bosch platinum's, new wires, MSD distributor, MSD 6al, and MSD blaster coil, New 02 sensor, new oil pressure sending unit, and removing that strip at the back of the hood. I hope to see maybe not a horsepower gain, but a quicker response to the throttle being touched and maybe a higher MPH? Ps the site is below.

Nope. The only reason so index is if you've milled the heads a ton or decked the block so that the plugs are hitting the piston. Then you index them so they don't. The other reason is if you have angled plugs then you index the spark to the exhaust side to keep the intake valve cool. That is the other reason for angled plugs. You could try to index to the exhaust side if you wanted to, but some of the engine builders I know say that even angled plugs don't help much for performance, they're just easier to change. Moral of the story, only index if you have piston clearance problems.

WTF? i thought you where supposed to index the plugs for better performance because the kernel of the flame is pointed towards the intake/exhaust, i dont remember which.
In theory you are supposed to index towards the exhaust side for better performance. I have a suggestion though. Go to the track run with indexed plugs. Then give them a half turn and run again. Tell me how your times turn out, because I'll bet you dollars to donuts that you won't see or feel a difference if you drive the car the same way twice.
