post turbo tunning
hey guys
im new to the turbo world...just starting to piece together my turbo concept, and by my parts. (although still at a loss about those manifolds :-/ i want to learn a lot about the tunning aspect of it all because...its pretty much the most important part of it all...but im lost at where to start. any sugestions??

The main obsticle when tuning for a turbo is detonation (aka: spark knock, ping, etc). There are at least 10 different methods for preventing detonation as well as any combination of those methods. The other main concern is proper fueling. If you run too lean and/or detonate, you will damage your engine.
The major areas are: ECU tuning or Carburetors, and other Mechanical and thermodynamic modifications.
to fight detonation and lean meltdowns:
-rich fueling
......Carb jetting and many other modifications to the carb
......FMU
......chip tuning
.............MAFecu tune or MAF transfer (with an FMU. Some argue the FMU is optional here)
.............7730ecu with an FMU
.............7749ecu or $58 bin inside of a 7730ecu with a 2 bar MAP sensor
............aftermarket engine management
-timing retard
......MSD BTM
......chip tuning:7749 or $58 code in a 7730
......aftermarket engine management
-low static compression ratio
......Dished pistons
......shorter stroke
......Larger combustion chambers
............Cylinder head CC
............Head gaskits
-Lower intake air temps
......Intercooling: bigger is almost always better
............optimal intercooler mounting
............N2O or CO2 spray bars
............Water-to-air or Air-to-Air
......Secondary injection
............methanol
............water
............mixture of water and methanol
............washerfluid
............windex?
......Cold air intakes/scoops/cowls
......Turbo compressor efficiency: compressor maps
......Turbine Aspect Ratio (aka: AR or A/R)
............powerband vs. spool-time tradeoff
......Use accurate and fast reacting sensors
-Primary Fueling
......high octane gasoline
......methanol
......nitro
......etc.
And many more...
I guarantee there are posts addressing every one of these issues. Thats how I even know they are issues. I've learned 90% of my turbo knowledge here.

Also , there are some good stickies up top and, the books called "turbochargers" and "Maximum boost "will really help on the some of the basic stuff.

thanks for the replies guys...i just went to barnes and noble and picked up turbochargers altho it does seem geard more towards pre 85 setup...seeing most of the info is geared towards carbs

yeha but it still covers the same issues you will have , like how to design the manifold correctly , intercooling , oil lines , etc. Great book to start off.

Once you get the combination running, and start playing with fuel and timing maps, you can set a throttle stop. Get the car tuned well at 50% throttle, then 60%, etc. Same with running a wastegate - start at low boost, get that tuned, and then go another 2 psi more, and tune that. This way you get it dialed in safely, and it's much easier than needing to do ten 5th gear runs at full boost on the highway, with your passenger looking down at the laptop, and your part throttle will be dialed in as well.
