two keyways on crank for procharger

Sending out scat rotating assembly to get balanced and was thinking about having them cut another keyway. Do all the procharger crank pulleys have a dual keyway? The guy at scat made a point to mention that for higher horsepower set ups sometimes you need the two keyways.

I really hate to tell you this but this is my experience. I've kept mum for years but your question really hit close to home.

I bought a 4340 forged crank from Scat in 2004. I had a second keyway cut and used an ATI Super Damper with a custom fabbed inner (much thicker and with two keyways). On my freshly built engine, I ran it without the blower belt for the first 1,000 miles. Everything was looking good. I installed the belt. At slightly less than 1,800 miles, the snout sheared off the crank. I never drove it hard and so boost only twice, and only 2-psig at that. Luckily, it sheared off when I was driving down my road at 20 mph so I did not have major catastrophic damage, only bent pushrods, bent valves, etc. I contacted Scat and was given the following offer: A 20 percent discount off the purchase of another crank!!

I had my crank inspected by a couple of mechanical engineers at my workplace and was told the fracture was due to shear over time. This was my proof that I did not hammer the throttle, causing an instantaneous fracture on the crank. Further inspection showed the threaded damper hole was drilled too deeply into the body, causing a definitive weak plane and the base of the radius leading to the first journal.

Currently, there is a class-action lawsuit against Scat for false and misleading advertising. Once they heard of this lawsuit, they immediately removed "Made in USA" off all their ads. But the suit will continue. All their parts are copied from various and reputable U.S. manufacturers and produced in Taiwan:

Port Job - Knock-off Aftermarket Automotive Products

I also had their 4340 forged rods in my engine but when it required disassembly, it was a no brainer not to use their rods again. I replaced the crank with a Cola 4340 piece and 4340 Manley rods. If you're okay with Scat products, good luck to you. But no more for me as I'm the primary in this class-action suit. Companies like these ignore all U.S. copyright laws and somehow get away with it. I believe they can continue to produce products as long as they are not advertising "Made in USA".

Wow. Tanks for letting us know Willie. I'm sure many people purchase Scat products.

I was under the impression they were a repectable company that made quality products.

Man! That happened to me to. Twice! First was a stock l98 crank. No Biggie.. Second was a stroker crank. Snapped right off pulling up to a stop light (about ready to race a viper) Thank god it broke when it did. I would of been mad if i was under WOT. I was running a eagle crank. Well..got a new one from them. Lets see if this one breaks.

Hey willie sorry to hear that, but thats the first bad thing I have heard bad about Scat. Did it have anything to do with the second keyway? What was Scats explaination of the failure? If it broke that easy means you got the occasional bad part, it happens. It defenitly sucks though.

Hey guys,

Add me to the list. My crank snout broke on the interstate today just driving normal.

I was amazingly lucky to be able to coast down an exit ramp and park the car on a side street.

Guess I will be parked for some time.

Willie, do you think the D-1SC will eat up a forged crank with one keyway from a good manufacturer?

Just wondering if it would be wise to abandon the Procharger on the rebuild.

What I personally do not like about large superchargers is the amount of side loading that happens to the snout of the crankshaft to try to get the belt to not slip.
