ok I have a senior school project and I thought about trying to build a car in my own. You see my dad and I have built/restored a 68 mustang, my T/A and we are building a dodge dart drag car, but this is really going to be more of his car So Iwant to build something on my own
anyway I have a 89 rs camaro with 260,000 miles on it and was thinking thinking about building a street strip car, it has a 2.8 in it, so i have three questions
would this need a ring and bearing rebuild
single or twin turbo?, im wanting to make 400 horses with what ever combo I settle on
we also have a 305 with 105,000 on it, would it be easier(cheaper) to make that kind of power a turboed 305
I want to do this as cheaply as possible ( low Low LOW budget)
btw I have welding /fab skills so I think I can do this, right?
Any help would be greatly appreiated

Wow, 260k miles huh? You are going to, at the very least, want to get new bearings, rings, seals, etc in the whole motor. I would recommend a full rebuild, bore over, magnaflux, etc with stronger rods and crank, IF not a brand spanking new motor with forged internals.
Just realize that a turbo project is a big project and can involve big bucks. How low of a budget are we talking here?

sorry about the delay, like maybe a $1000 budget, since I am just starting to get ideas and consider different options for power, I have time to find another car, so could you turbo a 2.8 motor and not rebuild it if it had say 100,000 miles on it?
I fully understand that this would be a big undertaking and I think I could do it
thank for the answer guitarjunki

I put a turbo on my 3.1 for about a grand. I have done many of V8 swaps, but am enjoying my 60* motor more and more. The new setup should get me well over 200hp, and when it's got turbos back on it, I should see over 500. It all depands on what YOU want to do.
BTW, your car already has forged rods, and I haven't seen a broken crank yet. The crank is rated to 7200RPM, and the 120* firing pattern, along with the even fire, these motors love to rev.

What I want is to have my T/a as my everyday car, and another car as a street strip car, some thing that runs 12s or high 11s and I could take to car shows

A turbo v6, or a V8 swap should do either for you.Originally Posted by 84bandit
