Has anyone ever tried to run one wastegate on a twin turbo setup? I was thinking a cross over between the two headers and a wastegate in the middle.

Yep, that is actually the recommended way to control boost on a twin set-up.
Reason being is that the crossover can equalize the exhaust pressure pre-turbine, for more equalized boost control between each turbo (good if you are running each turbo on seperate plenums to only half the engine), and also makes sure that both turbine have the exhaust bypassed at the very same instant for better control over shaft speed.

Might save a little bit of money, but the wastegate will need to be larger using a single wastegate than what each wastegate would be in a dual set-up. These wastegates are generally a little more money being larger.
