Making the S-trim quieter
Making the S-trim quieter
I have a Vortech on a 305 TPI. Very loud from day 1 at idle. I was thinking about upgrading to the V2-SQ but from what I've read hear it isn't much quieter than my current S-trim. I'm willing to trade power for stealth. Sure, I could remove it but what fun would that be? Since it's loudest at idle (700-800 RPM), has anyone tried changing out the pully to either larger or smaller to change RPM? I'm wondering if that would make any difference.
If I go smaller pully, I'd drop the rev limiter and consider adding alcohol injection. I don't race the car much any more but since he supercharger is already on it I'd like to keep it.

The blower seems "loudest" at idle because your engine is quietest at idle. The faster a gear driven centri spins the more noise it makes, so no, the smaller blower pulley won't help quiet things.
What type of intake do you have on the blower? An airbox surrounding your filter will minimize the noise a bit, (not a whole hell of a lot) as will the use of a good lenght of sillicone or similar tubing to locate the air filter further from the impeller.
A gear driven centri whines, it's a matter of fact.

If your looking for a quiet blower look into Powerdyne. They use an internal belt instead of staight cut gears.
Re: Making the S-trim quieter
Taking the RPMs up to 1100 definitely quiets the Vortech. I realize there's not much more engine noise but with your ear under the hood you can tell it gets quieter. It's actually 900 RPM where it seems to be the loudest.
I'm running the Vortech supplied intake and filter. It's a couple of plastic 90 degreee elbows and dryer duct type hose to an oiled filter.
Maybe I'll look into selling the Vortech and going Powerdyne.

Yep mines loudest at idle too. Its because it uses straight cut gears, like most stick cars use a straight cut gear for reverse. This is why you can hear the trans whine in reverse. Same thing. The SQ-trim uses a different gear tooth angle. Forget the name, helical? They are quieter, but still noticeable.
