Turbo, Supercharger? What is the diff, and Personally What Do you Recommend for me?

Peeps,

I have a 1985 stock 305 TPI, I and def. wanting some preformance upgrades, such as a turbo or supercharger, but really don't know the diff. see I am newer that a baby out of the womb at this stuff. So I need some help.

I want to know what will make me fly but also here and there help some with MPG's as much as possible persay.

Now I have read some threads of taking some off certains cars say for turbo's so you don't have to pay a arm and a leg. IF SO, what ones will work with mine, and are they hard to bolt up? Any other info please throw it my way.

Thanks a HEAPPP!

Your question? Kind of answers itself, in the fact that you are way to new at this stuff to make a wise choice either option you listed, neither will help MPG(period) they are methods to burn more fuel.

Your best bet in my opinion would be to learn how to tune...

learn to use stuff like moates.net...equipment ostrich (emulation)
learn to use a Wide-band O2 sensor for tuning

once you REALLY get ahold of this things. you won't really need to ask this post at all.

_______

if you really want a low down on your questions? I would gladly, break it down for you... just reply in this post...( even though I don't believe you should do either {YET})

in addition to the previous post (which I agree completely)

turbo is more complicated, power at higher rpms, more efficient than supercharger

supercharger gives more low end power

you will have alot to learn and spend to get either setup to work properly

If you want more power, the first thing I would do is swap to a 350

I agree - take the same money that you would spend on a Supercharger or Turbo setup and install a higher performance 350 or even a 383. You will get much more reliability and a lot of fun out of that upgrade.

After that if you still want more power then I would suggest a Supercharger so you avoid the on/off switch that is a turbocharger. ATI Procharger would be my suggestion at that point - no turbo lag and it builds from lower RPMs.

you mean a compound set up... ie turbocharger feeding a roots supercharger?... would be sick... in the head to spend that kind of money

Is it true there is a supercharger that can be totally concealed under the hood? If so who makes it?

The Procharger and Vortech units (and probably any other centrifugal supercharger) can be completely under the hood. You will still hear the supercharger whine though.

ATi, Vortec, etc... just about any centrifugal supercharger should fit under the hood. Though a F1 doesn't quite fit.

If you have a car and want to maximize power without reducing fuel economy then you need to make the engine breath easier and exhale faster. To that end, cold air intakes, intake upgrades (runners, plenum), headers and a cat-back will give significant increases in power without sacrificing any fuel economy becuase they will make the engine more efficient. Along those lines better combustion via an aftermarket ignition box to promote more complete burn of the fuel will increase power and economy yet again.

If you want to make more beyond that without losing fuel economy you'll need a set of heads that flows a great deal more but still has good low lift numbers and a intake runner close in volume to the original heads which are very small, 175cc runners would be your best bet.

Throughout all of this you'll need to retune the PCM for the best power output and economy.

Ultimately after all this is done, it still would be cheaper to swap in a Gen3 small block. Heads/headers/intake mods adds up quick and LS1 drivetrains are getting cheaper n' cheaper.

Stick with your n/a carbed 350 for now.

And why are you concerned with fuel economy if you have a carbed engine. Find a LT1 to swap in, with headers you'll make decent power and still average near 20mpg.
