Head Selection for Whipple SC

Guys and Gals would like to get some opinions on what is the best size of head to go with for a SC. I have a 355, 2.3 Whipple @ 10psi boost, 750 cfm 454 TBI bored to 54mm ports, Longtube headers 2 1/2 duals, with Comp Cams roller 08-503-8, and EBl computer. I had it running with vortec heads and looking to make a head upgrade. Shooting for 9:1 CR and with current cam that gives me a dynamic 11.7:1 CR. I have been looking at several heads and getting many different opinions.

The two heads that I like the best so far (opinion could be easily changed) is the AFR 195 Eliminator and the Pro-Filer 176 in 195cc. My max budget is $1500 and currently persuaded to the AFR due to the being emissions friendly expecting a move to emissions testing state in the near future. Does any one have a better head recommendation and what intake runner size, is 210 to big? Any other key points to look at when picking a head for SC? I have heard need to keep an eye on I/E ratio; which both of these heads look good.

195-210cc would work well. Guys generally try to size heads about the same if not a tad larger than a n/a setup. Afr's or profiler 195's will easily do everything you need. 9:1 comp is good for boost. Could use abit better cam for blower but that should work

I would get a cylinder head that has 210 runners 68 or 76 cc chambers with at least a 2.05 or larger intake Valve.

Just my 2cents worth.

I have a 355 with a 6-71 blower with 64cc chambers 210 intake runners, -20cc dish lunati pistons comp cam 12-704-8 255/262 575/575 with 10lbs of boost. runs like a crazed ape!

Re: Head Selection for Whipple SC

Thanks for the input. Planning on going with bigger chamber and going with flattops. One thing that has me going back to the 195cc runner is with my last setup using vortec heads I was able to get 24mpg down the hwy in a C1500 2wd ext. was also little high on compression though. I am just assuming that the smaller runner would help a little on MPG. This is a toy truck that I like to play hard on and drive on cruises. Still tough decision 210 or 195

Just running some quick numbers on your setup Camaro. Guessing you are at 8.5:1 CR and with your cam specs puts you at a dynamic CR 9.4. I am shooting for 9:1 putting me at a dynamic CR 11.8:1.

How is your setup for drive ability?

Orr89 your info intrigued me to look at your ride. All I can say is amazing and BA. What dynamic CR are you running with 14 psi and seeing that you are running the AFR 195 and got that kind of time has me about sold. I am all ears for cam options what would you recommend or who would you recommend to talk to?

Re: Head Selection for Whipple SC

Smaller runner usually keeps velocity up so you get little better response at lower rpms but with a whipple blower you will have torque for response. Boost will make up for the lack of velocity if any... A 210 cc head is not overly big for a strong 355, but usually needs more cam to take advantage of the rpm range capable with the large runner. With blower the air density increases so much you get good cylinder fill and can compensate for the larger heads.
Just keep in mind the 210 heads are 1206 gasket port size and 195's should be 1205. Not sure what the manifold size is for the blower

And i have no clue what my effective compression ratio is with boost. Never bothered to calculate it. It just works fine on pump gas and hauls the mail. That old combo with afr 195 on a 400 sbc is actually too small of a head for that motor but really did work well.

As for a cam you can try a few custom grinders. Mike Jones of jonescams.com, bullet racing cams, bret bauer, and others are out there.
