nitrous question

So im new to the board but not to cars, I have done a lot of searching but cant find exactly what im looking for. My buddy and I are building an 89 iroc 5.7 tpi and I was wondering if the stock motor could handle this kit.

we are planning on having it tuned as well. My other questions are will a custom cam be worth it if we keep the heads stock? And what about the injectors. Also will the trans handle it?

We will be bumping the pump to a 255 and plan on doing a lsx swap in about a year or so unless this motor goes before hand.

Sorry for the newb questions I know a good amount 4th gens and lsx motors but 3rd gens are a new frontier

In short, yes.... if motor is in good shape and you do the install correctly and tune it correctly it should handle 100-150 shots for alittle while. Wont last forever, but should do well for awhile. Really need to pay attention to what you are doing with the setup.

we are planning on having it tuned as well.
Theres no plan...its a must do. start small, 50-75 shot and recommended jetting. Monitor plugs and get a wideband o2 sensor. Invest in an ignition box that has a timing retard for nitrous. Window switch would be nice as well. Mallory 685 or equal. Setup the system on a WOT switch tied into a window switch.

My other questions are will a custom cam be worth it if we keep the heads stock? And what about the injectors. Also will the trans handle it?
cam will help, but doesnt really need to be a nitrous cam, but considering the exhaust/intake flow ratios and the extra amount of nitrous coming out, it would be a good idea to have a new cam made and lean towards abit better nitrous performance. Alot of guys tho dont make big changes in cam specs for nitrous under 300 shots. What works well n/a seems to work well on spray.
Injectors can stay stock unless they are old and unless you get a cam. Setup injectors for the motor's n/a hp. Spray is wet shot so it gets fuel externally from the rails. No need for larger injectors.

Tranny if stock will not last long behind spray, especially if you hit it off the line on slicks. Plan for rebuild very soon. May get lucky for alittle while tho. Depends on shape of tranny.

We will be bumping the pump to a 255 and plan on doing a lsx swap in about a year or so unless this motor goes before hand.

Same things you do to forth gens apply to sbc's. No difference. you have air fuel and spark. Just that LSx stock have better parts to begin with and thus better intial power and longevity.
255 pump is a must, dont trust an old stocker. You'll want to extra flow for bolt on mods plus spray anyway.

Re: nitrous question

Thanks Orr I was hoping to get a response from you lol. Tune yes im having a local performance shop do it, we are ordering LT's and having a custom ORY built. The fuel pump will be ordered the same time the exhaust is ordered. Then the wet kit will come a few weeks later. The plan is to just make it a fun daily until we are ready for the ls swap. We arent trying to put to much money into it because we will be swapping everything out next winter. The car/dealer says 53k miles but im pretty sure its 153k.

But if you feel it needs that much work then we will probably just move forward on an ls swap

Re: nitrous question

I would just try to get away with as little as possible for now. Do fuel pump because that will work for ls. Swap in ls1 ijectors too or whatever ones you need for the ls in the future. They will work on the sbc for now with chip programmed for it.
