Re: and so it starts

i mannaged to get the motor out and the engine bay stripped but stopped taking pics after i started tearing down the engine , ill take more when im back in the shop later this week.

the engine looks brand new inside still even with all the abuse i put it threw, i was starting to show some signs of detonation though i think the popup dome pistons are to blame for that , im going to install new bearings in the bttom end reassemble it and put the engine minus the turbos into my 3/4 ton truck to replace the semi tired tbi engine

the new engine going in the car is a
4 bolt main 350 .030 over
flat top forged pistons with 4v reliefs
this one will also get a sum 1105 cam or a comp xe268
picked up a mini ram intake thats going on it
im not sure what heads im going to drop on it yet,i have a few diff heads to choose from
then the old turbo system will be put on the engine

anyways heres some more pics of the days progress

Wish my days were that productive. Think I'm going into hibernation up north here. Will be very interesting to see what the Miniram does for you. I mean, you basically had a stock TPI right?

Wow! Was that piston damage due to something loose in the cylinder, was it because of the wrong plugs being used, or was it due to using boost on the motor?

4 bolt main , forged crank , basically going to be the same as my old engine minus the domed pistons, old engine was a 355 , this new one is a std bore 350

looks like something got loose in the engine at some point , it has no cyl wall damage , and no damage to the head that was on it

it apears to either have been a piece of porcelain from a spark plug or a very tiny screw

theres a part number on the bottom of the piston so im going to order 1 new piston if i can, if i cant im going to file off the high spots and see just how bad the damage is , pistons are 0 deck so i can always machine 5 thou off the tops if need be

Tough call on that. I think they are so close that it won't matter much. The 110 LSA will just "hit" a little harder. Idle will be a little more work to tune depending on injector size and firing scheme.

Looks great so far. How sharp are the edges on the piston marks? Any sharps edges to cause hot spot detonation? I don't think so but just asking.

nope i filed them all flat , thing is i got a split set of roller rockers ill throw the 1.6's on the intake side

hate to admit it but i new the 224/224 would work great but picked the 268 cause of idle sound lol

new engine should be back together by wensday if it warms back up

work on the car has stalled otherwise , its been 0* here past few days , heater cant keep the shop warm enough to finish painting the car and i need that done before the motor goes back in

For me, threads like this are indispensable. The amount of knowledge learned here is amazing. Question though ,they look great as far as the actual bead goes but are you going to file the beads on the covers down ? Seems they should blend in better or not be seen at all.

if i was building a shaved car and really clean engine bay i would.
but i actually prefer the look

when i built the sheetmetal intake for my v6 car i left all the welds alone as well , id rather look at a nice weld then a perfectly smooth intake or valve cover

could be cause by trade i am a welder/machinist

Re: and so it starts

I did some research and find that most of the tall high end covers have the welds showing and do add that touch of professionalism. I’m no pro but when I was much younger I tried a few different types of welding and can agree that there is a certain amount of admiration when seeing a nice bead. Whether it’s done by hand or not.

Re: and so it starts

gota love ordering from summit racing , ordered late last night , and parts will be here by noon tomorrow, not that it really matters i cant work on it till friday anyways

my last big decision is if im going to do a main and head stud kit , kinda worried about not being able to pull the heads off in the car if i do head studs on it
and i may also spring for a fixed idler style gear drive so i can play with advance/retard on the cam pretty easy , kinda torn on that as i had one of those pete jackson noisy gear drives on one of my old irocs , i loved it for about the first 2-3 days , then i couldnt stand it

Re: and so it starts

I'd be tempted to do the head studs. ARPs should have an allen head in them so you can pull em out easy in car. If you don't find the limits of the main webbing on that 400 you'll quite plausibly find the limits of the deck.

I'd probably skip the main studs due to the potential for distortion of the bores and needing a line hone. I would find it amusing to see what the results were if you had a bore dial gauge and torqued em down and measured the distortion.

I'd probably skip the main studs due to the potential for distortion of the bores and needing a line hone. I would find it amusing to see what the results were if you had a bore dial gauge and torqued em down and measured the distortion.
not building the 400 ive decided its to weak for the power im going to make

Re: and so it starts

well the valve springs off my old engine are no good and i need new valve springs , summit recomends this kit
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-174000/overview/
125# on the seat , 304#'s open @ .496 lift provided the install height is correct at 1.750

springs are supposed to be good till .550 lift

but they dont give a coil bind number

would u use them or have a suggestion for a different spring?

Looks like it comes with + .050" retainers (1.75-1.160-.050) = .540 max lift
Sounds reasonable for standard spring.
Would be nice to see the 125# seat pressure in writing.

I decided to go with RV-1943X on my vortec heads and using a 220/220 duration, .328" lift roller

Titanium valve parts?

I thought you were going with the summit racing $70 valve spring and retainer kit. Why did you change your mind?

Re: and so it starts

started to assemble the new engine today didnt make it very far due to a piston ring issue

main clearance is as follows ( front to rear)

#1 .0025 -.003 ( hard to tell exactly with the plastigauge as it only went from .002 to .003
#2 .003
#3 .003
#4 .003
#5 .0025 - .003

over all im pleased with the clearances on this engine

the mains are tq'ed 80ftlbs inner bolts , and 70ftlbs outers

then it came time to fit the rings

im going with a .029 top gap and .023 second gap
anyways i went to put the first ring in the bore to measure it to see how much id have to file it and the gap came out at .081 , looks like they sent me a standard ring set instead of a .030 over set

so its on hold for now till i can get the ring set exchanged or another set on its way

Re: and so it starts

got a new set of .030 over moly rings on the way second day air so they should be here right after xmas.

hoping i can get this thing together and back in the car next weekend barring any other issues

soon as this engine is done im going to send out my roller block for machining as a spare engine for this coming years drag season
.030 over dish pistons
vortec heads
vortec hsr
roller cam

was going to put it in my silverado but im going to do the build super chevy i think it was did with a vortec headed 406 and put that in my truck instead, then the thing might have some much needed towing power lol

Re: and so it starts

rings wont be here till tuesday or thursday , tracking number says schedualled for jan 2nd but it says 2 busniess days left on the tracking so im hoping they will be here tuesday

the heads i pulledd off the original motor are junk , they have so much valve guide cleance i can move the valve around damn near an 1/8th inch ) its a shame cause they have a really nice port job and bronze guides installed

i refuse to spend the money for new guides so i broke down and bought a set of heads
200cc 64 cc chambers and the hsr , should be a nice gain over the tpi and iron heads

as of right now the only thing done on the engine is the crankshaft is installed
besdies that i picked up a good th350 core and th400 build cost thanks to my friend is minimal on the th350 so i may try that first but i have a feeling im going to end up with the th400 in the end

Re: and so it starts

so somehow i goofed up when figuring out the cr with the new heads , and its going to be 10.2-1 with my current flat tops and a .041 gasket ( opps lol ). so now im ordering up a new set of pistons , im not even going to buy forged ones going to get a 90$ set of Speedpro H423ACP's , theese are dished 4vr pistons with a 10 cc dish

theese are .020 down in the hole though so a .021 or .015 shim type gasket will be mandatory , ut compression will be back down in the 8.9-1 to 9.1-1 range

i fought off the urge to buy a set of bushed rods so i could use floating pins , but the more i thought about it the more i relized it wasnt worth the extra cost as ive already spent to much money on this thing

Could experiment with higher quench height. Some say it doesnt matter as much with boost, some say over .100" it acts same as .040". Just something to consider

And I thought it was just me where projects snowballed. I resisted this on my current low budget vortec build. Just needed a crank.....
The single plane EFI, roller cam, head parts, and crank quickly added up to almost a grand. Sad, I can search around and find LQ4 6.0 LSx every once in a while for that price.

Re: and so it starts

im running it as is with the flat top pistons, if it pings ill pull the motor and swap the pistons out for the dished pistons

95% of this cars life is daily driver duty at 7-12 psi even with 10.2-1 comression it should be fine , methanol injection should be enough for higher boost when it sees track time

Is that a 8 nozzle setup or 1 shark?
Why not setup up for boost and cool the high compression with N2O?
