Re: Another single turbo build

Took it back apart.

Cut the down pipe part off, and the #8 primary. Gonna run the primary up and over I think, and redoing the down pipe part so it doesn't rub the spark plug boot.

Also, picked up a huge belt sander so I can straighten the flanges.

Made a little jig so I know where I need the DP to go.

Re: Another single turbo build

Rev3.

So, now I've got at least an inch clearance on a full length spark plug.
I found that if I weld a nice bead, the thing warps like nothing else. If I just tack tack tack it slowly the welds come out ugly as sin, but I get less warpage. This must be a stainless thing because I can go hog wild on mild steel without this BS.

I just gotta extend the crossover part another 10 inches tomorrow and put it back in the car.

Yes that warping thing sucks. You can have the most perfect clearance and alignment ever tacked up.. then weld it and nothing fits. Looks like you're getting close!

I am.. I actually think it will work right, but I'm still slightly concerned about the flanges leaking a little. I might put some copper RTV on both sides of the gasket before I clamp it down later.

I wish it didn't look some. pieced together. I've cut and welded, and re welded it so many times now.

I wish someone made a decent T4 cast manifold.

i use copperrtv on both sides of a gasket or just copper rtv and no gasket of the flange is really close to perfectly flat

also ive been real sick all week and havent been to the shop for those pics for ya

I used copper rtv on both sides. I used studs as suggested by twin_turbo. Tightened right up.

Crossover looks good, clears the starter. Although it's quite close to a brake line.

Do they make blankets that slide over pipe? Kinda like a turbo blanket?

You looking for T4 cast twin or single setup?
What are your favorite stock GM cast manifolds? If you have a TIG, you can just arc weld mild steel to cast with some 60% nickel rod. For $50 you can be done with it and have 600HP capable manifolds that will last forever and be compact.

Single.

I've seen people modify cast manifolds for twins. I've never seen a good single made out of one. Probably cuz it's hard to merge the crossover into it.

What's the best flowing GM cast manifold?

I don't get how guys run those. I tried mounting my turbo with the flange like that, you have to come out of it 90* for the downpipe.

Any pics of those on a thirdgen?

Anyway, still, I wish I had a nice high flowing cast single manifold. The tubular stuff is a PITA. I got it working now, but I bet in 3 months it will warp, crack and start leaking.

noone on tgo that i know of using them but theres guys using that syle on ttf.com
i will be using a set on my car with twin 61mm turbos to start, vbands will be chopped off though
i dont want to fully let the cat out of the bag, as ive been keeping the overall appearance of my car secret for some time both body wise, and paint wise

turbos will be on slight angles but mounted front and center , downpipes will run under the headers and out fenderwells

with a single turbo put the turbo in the battery tray make the xover to connect and run the downpipe out the passengerside under the header

Not that hard, I would just place the turbo closer to the front...

That bottom manifold in that picture is a Martin cast turbo manifold.

The closest I've seen is twins made out of some thirdgen manifolds, but I wonder if the cross section in those is enough to flow without burning out the exhaust valves.

Re: Another single turbo build

Is that what your looking to do, run a cast setup? I can't stand welding cast, I experimented with it but then promised myself I would never bother with it again, and mine have been pending ever since. I have a set of stock manifolds, and a crossover that I made from an SLP y-pipe that I modified for additional clearance for the downpipe that I was going to use on an LG4, I just never welded the cast T4 flange into the passenger side exhaust manifold. I forget the GN adage about flow, but I am pretty certain those guys confirm that a 2" crossover can support 700 horsepower, and 2 1/4" over 1000 horsepower. Never measured the stock exhaust manifolds cross section, but there's really only one way to find out if it will be a deterrence...

Will a passenger side LT1 manifold work flipped? It looks like a good design in terms of flow, but I wonder if when flipped if the humps will whack the plugs.

Re: Another single turbo build

Using an Inconel-82 filler rod makes welding cast iron much better. If the casting is real low grade or dirty it is still going to be very hard to weld, but if it's a decently clean casting the Inco helps a bunch.

I've got some rods my buddy gave me from the portsmouth shipyard. He said don't weld indoors, or breath it in or I'll die. But otherwise it's supposedly cast-iron magic.

Re: Another single turbo build

Cast welds great when properly prepped, using the correct technique and material (rod).
Most people learned to just-get-by welding with a MIG and expect to weld cast using the same hack process. It don't work 98% of the time.

Get some nickel rod, prep with V-groove, pre-heat, weld, post-cool and it will last for ever.

What is the price per pound of the Inconel rod?

Take a look at the solar flux warnings..........

Not really. The car runs on the heavily modified chinese manifold. I can't hear exhaust leaks, but I can sure smell them. I think the downpipe might be the only leak left.

I'm kind of at a stand still right now. I've got dynamat, new carpet, and a full interior. But I'm not sure if I want to put the roll bar in the car now or wait until next winter.

I also have the manual trans in the car right now, and I'm thinking of swapping to a 3 speed automatic. I live like 20 minutes from the track and I have the trailer so I might as well bracket race the car.

I've got boxes full of weatherstrip I need to put on. I need to rivet the door handle supports (for the GTA door panels). I still have to shoot the mirrors and wing, and hood scoop insert flat black which I can't do until until it's warmer. I've got a new 400lph fuel pump to install, and I've got to replace the O-ring retainers on the injectors cuz most of them broke.

But, since it's getting warm now and I've got about 40 yards of manure to deal with I need to jump on the bobcat and fix a few things on that, so I can clean up my turnouts. The regulator died so it kills the battery, and it's a real PITA to get to on this machine.

Joe,

Here's mine that I modified. I also made the merge work really well too. It was a bitch but I got both factory manifolds to work. It's been coated and cleaned up since this but you get the idea. ALOT easier than making headers.

Finishing making the carb hat and cold side this weekend. Supposed to get 6" of snow though...

Re: Another single turbo build

Started touching this again. In the spring my mother got sick, so I had been busy with dr. appointments and such and stopped focusing on the car. She passed away in June, and then I had spent most of the summer working on the house (new driveway, roof, etc). Hopefully I'll have some time to try this thing out at the track before it closes for the season.

Believe me when I tell you that your mother stands with a greater power now Joe, and you will see her again. Don't ever let go of the faith of just knowing that, because it is the truth. Remember that dreams are a conduit, and they are the only way that those who moved on to immortality can reconnect with you while you are still here in the mortal world, so keep an open mind until the day comes when you rejoin your loved ones yourself. Stay strong.

Thank you for the kind words. It's been a tough spring and summer, especially for my father.

I gotta finish framing the roof over the kitchen, and split about 6 cords of firewood then maybe I can play with the car some more

Hello,

Finished re-doing my roof. Gotta do the plywood on the walls and siding then I can play with the car again.

This time of year by the time I get home from work it's near dark,so I can only tinker with things on the weekends. Until a few days ago you could see the stars looking straight up from my kitchen so I had to finish that
