Unkown CR 5 psi Vortech with 383
Unkown CR 5 psi Vortech with 383
Getting a pretty decent bonus this year and considering adding Vortech 5-6 PSI Supercharger kit to my 383. My problem is I don’t know my current CR. Specs are below on engine build, it engine dyno’d at 460hp/502ft lb at Peak with above 400tq across the band
Cam: XR 282HR-10 .510/.520 110 LSA
Heads: Blueprint Engine Aluminum 195cc 64cc combustion chamber
Eagle Street Performance Rotating Assembly, Cast Crank, Hypereutectic Pistons, I Beam Rods, Piston head volume +5cc. The notes on the kit say perfect choice for engines up to 500hp.
Holley EFI Sniper with distributor running everything.
Am I asking for trouble by adding 5-6 PSI on this setup? Or can this be done safely? Car is a weekend cruiser with manual trans.

Re: Unkown CR 5 psi Vortech with 383
5cc should be closer to 10.5-10.9:1 which is relatively higher for boost but only a few psi should work fine. Intercooled.
just have to tune it well, go easy on timing and run it abit richer to be safe. Not a fan of cast cranks but it should be ok

Thanks, the kit doesn’t come with intercooler and looks to come direct off the charger to the carb hat. When we tuned the Holley, we put some parameters in for timing and let the Holley do the rest and it kept everything really friendly and conservative. The Holley SuperSniper is supposed to be able to do the same with the self tuning for boost. The tuner mentioned we could get more aggressive but with my weekend cruiser goals there was really no point with longevity in mind. Without Intercooler, am I asking for danger with compression that high at low boost? It’s really a “I’m a running a supercharged 383” thing as it looks cool under the hood and sounds good but I don’t want to change pistons/head gaskets etc to have a little whine as I’m happy with my current power levels. Is it possible to have bypass or blowoff with a spring that bleeds off at say 4psi non intercooled that would make this setup safe?

Re: Unkown CR 5 psi Vortech with 383
Depends on how hot the air temps get.
4-5 psi isnt not alot but blowers taking hot engine bay temps and running directly into intake tend to heat soak and get hotter.
also im not a fan of self tuners. I would command known to work timing values. For something like this, assuming 100% wot on motor 34 degrees was best, id run 26-28 on 5 psi for now. 11.8-12.0 afr on fuel. Start conservative and can work from there.
