headers as turbo manifolds?

I was wondering if regular headers such as tri-y shorties with the 3 bolt flange collector can be used as turbo manifolds, you know the block hugger kind
my idea was to flip them upside down and mount the turbos like that if it wont work can you tell me why not?
ex. precision turbos te 32's have three bolt flange exhaust housings

I always thought that was a good idea too.....possible hood clearance problems though......Maybe theyre not strong enough to hold the heat of the turbos. If someone could shed some light on this....Id be interested too

I guess it could work as long as you dont mind the turbos sticking up through your hood, best bet is to order some mandrel bends, a set of flanges and start to welding/cutting.

I thought about the same thing. Someone has actually done something similar to that.

It looks like this:

Some people have also used the old ramshorn exhaust manifolds turned upside down.

as long as the headers arent mild steel...it'll burn thru...why stainless and cast are the two most common used...

Let me guess, it is someone named Smitty? (right click, save as).

that is VERY clean. He did a nice job of stuffing that into his 3rd gen. is he running an IC up front, horizontle like the one that wilie is running? (I think that it is willie, & I am sure a bunch of others).

SO.............. how does it run?

I agree. That is the most clean set-up I think that I've ever seen...

Details on Preston's car

I'd love to hear some details about internal components (cam specifically, then heads). Some say it's still a 305. If it is, I really doubt its the stock bore and stroke. A 4" bore and a 3" stroke will get you a 302, so... Does he have a current website anywhere? I've seen him up at Epping, but never had a chance to chat.

As far as I know it's still a 305. I wet my pants with excitement everytime I see that car. *feels about* Yup, they're wet alright.

I love it

I love those pistures. I thought that a/c would not be possible with that setup, but vintage air has come up with a new accesory system that uses a sanden compressor. I think it would work. Its in the new chp. Ill go by there this week and ask about it.

I was just looking at the wheelwell - I am considering a similar mod on my own project. I wonder what kind of tire clearance he has when the wheels are blocked?

I remember seeing a "basement bomber" home built turbo kit made with commercially available stainless shorty headers (maybe nova?) turned upside down (so they face mostly up but forward) I cant remember if it was in a third gen, the guy lopped off the 3 bolt flange and welded some on from turbo city and used 2 volvo or 2.3 t bird or grand national turbos he had rebuilt. it looked like an intercooler would be able to be plumbed in but there wasnt one and it was TPI.
