Forged internals and n2o
I have saved some money and and want to build on my 305 TBI. Everything on this car is bone-stock. I was looking at engine re-build kits with piston heads, crank, rods etc. I am wondering what exactly a forged kit will do for me over a regular cast kit ? I know you can run more n2o but how much more? Will it make it stronger all around and be worth the extra $300? And one last question, what do they do to make them "forged"....what does forged mean?
first off lll anser your question about forging. forging is when metal is heated in a furnace and the metal is shaped by hammering into a specific shape. the internals in your motor are cast, casting is a method that involves taking molten metal and pouring it into a cast to form a specific design or shape.
A forged rotating assembly will include (usually) a forged crank, powdered rods, and a set of pistons (your choice in compression) if youre actually up for rebuilding your 305, its obviously your choice.
I'd say find yourself a decent 4 bolt 350 block, have it machined and cleaned, and throw in a set of forged pistons. Work with a carbureted setup, rather than the TBI setup, it'll be far more beneficial than the TBI as far as use of nitrous, and high-end performance. cylinder heads are relatively expensive for decent ones, I've heard good things about vortec heads though. your stock 305 should be able to handle about 100-125 horses worth of nitrous as is. if you had a forged rotating assembly in your current 305, it wouldnt do you much good because you arent really able to run more than 200 shot through 4-AN lines and those little sollenoids that come with the kit.
good luck
