Well, along with Dirk's address, a WHOIS shows this:

thirdgen.org: Record created on 06-Jan-1998.

Guess that ends that.

Yup.

And Dirk's registration is like that because when he updated the board software he re-registered.

If you want all the downlow on TGO's past, contact PonyKiller from nethirdgen.org I think it's him that told me pretty much everything, though I forgot a lot of it now.

The "original" TGO was created by Dirk in 1996 and was run off a server at the University of Missouri through an agreement Dirk had with someone else (don't know the name) from Missouri. This partnership ended and the site was moved to Arizona, where it still resides today. The site was taken off-line in 1998 due to "complications" -- sorry, I will not go into details here -- never to return. This is when spinoff websites were created, such as nethirdgen.org (northeast) and sethirdgen.org (southeast). A couple of months after the site was disconnected, I had a person-to-person talk with Dirk to try to pursuade him to bring it back up. At that time, he was hesitant. I did give him ideas of changes that should take place to make the "new" site better. Eventually, Dirk decided to try it again. He contacted an old member Brad (Dallas, Texas), who offered to assist running the site, and here we are today, stronger than ever.

Today, Dirk essentially runs the whole show. He lives in Tucson, Arizona and only 10 minutes from me. Any other questions?

I'm curious if this board funds him. Meaning if it's his job.

I would think most of the sponsors ad placements pay for the bandwidth, and space the site takes up, along with domain re-registration though.

Willie, I wish you lived closer, I would love to see your car someday. Last time I was in AZ, I almost died from heat stroke, so i doubt ill be there anytime soon.

The answer is no. Dirk is a full-time network admin at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy. He's married and has three kids. This is one of the reasons why the site went down four years ago. He did not have time, nor funds to keep it alive. You see, he was working this site from home at nights after his job. This took quality time away from him and his family. There were other issues, but burnout was definitely one of them. Also, he was having to shell out his hard earned money for bandwidth and space. The advertisement does not even cover the cost of running the site. Can you imagine? It's a wonder he brought it back, much less keeping it going for years. That's the dedication he has to us. He does it for the love of our cars. BTW, he owns a '92 GTA.

I hope a lot of you guys read this and realize the commitment Dirk has shown and appreciate this site even more. Without him, none of us would be here. We cherish this place.... This is probably why we (the moderators) might seem strict at times to guys who cause trouble.

Well, you need to be here during the winter months. They're almost the same as your summer months!!

Willie explained alot, but this happened 2 years ago:

"The site was taken off-line in 1998 due to "complications" -- sorry, I will not go into details here -- never to return. This is when spinoff websites were created, such as nethirdgen.org (northeast) and sethirdgen.org (southeast)."

Nope. I ran a 12.00 late last year. I've been to the track only a couple of times since (last spring) and could not better it. Since then, I've added a few more mods, the most notable being the twin intercooler setup, a blower & crank pulley change (more boost) and a true dual exhaust. I have not run my car since these changes. Maybe in February or so.

I also have severe traction issues, even with E/T Streets. I might have to go back to 3.23's (from my current 3.73's).

You should defintely be in the 11's soon.

Yup, Dirk makes all this possible guys. He deserves alot of credit for the money he pays for all of us to be on here and learn for free on the best site for Third Gens and the best technical site I think there is, with all of the other responsibilities he has. Like Willie said, this place means alot to us. You should have seen how it was for us when the site wasn't here, we don't ever want that again.

For those of you who dont live in Arizona, you should make a trip here sometime. We are getting the ThirdGen scene going pretty well. Most of us in Southern Arizona have met at one time or another. I feel lucky to have been stationed here in the Air Force, and have got to meet those here, esp. Willie. He has been such a great help to me. He is truly a guru of third gens.

I have been able to hang out with Dirk a few times. What a great guy. If it wasnt for him (and those who have helped him), most of us would be on another board, with a bunch of trolls. I cant wait to help Dirk get his tranny swap done tomorrow and be able to roll out with him, and maybe Willie.

To all on the boards, have a safe and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. And remember, DONT drink and drive. Thomas
